This is stupid. Frost isn’t the guy, he’s shown nothing to prove he can be the guy, and you’re just delaying the inevitable.

He’s fired like 5 coaches today and restructured his deal. Just rip the band aid off. What good is going to come from this?

The main reason: $20mm buyout. Nebraska didn't want to pay it so NU/Frost restructured the deal. Frost's leash is short. He'll have to get some better recruits (bad class thus far) and land some dudes from the portal. If not, he could get a quick axe next season if they're not winning.

Frost is stubborn though, he'll likely ride with Martinez for one more year.

I’m kind of surprised about this. I thought he would be gone. Watching some of their games this year, they are much better/more competitive than previous seasons. But w/l generally is all that matters.

When Trev Alberts became the AD at Nebraska-Omaha, he dropped football and wrestling and moved UNO to the Summit League.

Maybe his goal is to kill Husker football so that he can get Nebraska out of the BiG and into the Summit League.

Half kidding aside, Nebraska is in a tough position. I hope that Frost can get them turn around.

That has to be tough for Nebraska fans...
There is no replacement for Tom Osborne- his coaching career at Nebraska was phenominal and no one else will come close! The school is also no longer a hot spot for big time recruits, unlike prior decades...

I’m not familiar at all with their roster makeup, but they’ve played a lot of ranked teams close. Feels like IF they can get most to come back, they might make some noise next year.

I was told by an NCAA official that when Tom Osborne was there they had many walkons that had their expenses paid by boosters. Then others were given scollies. Osborne let the players get away with most anything. This guy gave me some examples that were mind blowing. Since there are so few division 1 players in Nebraska they relied on out of state recruits via incentives. Now with recruiting being so competitive they have fallen behind much like Tennessee.

You think Texas is going to fire Sark after two seasons?

I agree with this move. Despite their losing he hasn't lost the team or had mass attrition. They still play hard.

Giving him one more year to see if he's turned the corner won't be a big deal. I'm sure the "re-work" of his contract lowered the buyout as well.

His main problem was sticking with Martinez. He should've went to the portal for a veteran QB.

With a just average QB they are at least .500 this year and probably better.

Bad year for them to be searching.

I agree. I think this is one of the reasons with the other being, as other posters have pointed out, they have lost close games to some good teams.

That said, I think if there is not improvement next season he will be gone.

His buyout went from $15 mill to $7.5 mill. I think Harbaugh made a similar deal and it's worked out. If Frost is willing to take a bet on himself, not really any reason not to give him another year.

Nebraska hasn't found a way to win the close games, but the MO of any Nebraska team thru the Callahan, Pelini, and Riley years was to beat up on crappy schools and get shellacked by 40 points to any team with a pulse. Nebraska has lost 4 games against Ohio State, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Michigan State by a combined 22 pts. The wins have to come at some point, but in a weird way this team feels like the most competitive team in 12 years for Nebraska

I watch a lot of Husker games since I work in the upper plains a lot and generally like the area, and there's a lot of positive feeling like this through the whole region. They really think this team is on the verge of busting through and making a run - just need a decent signal caller because Martinez is just junk. He has no business being at the FBS level.

Bob Devaney built Nebraska into a national powerhouse in the 1960s and 1970s. Tom Osborne continued that success.

Truth.

Martinez has lost like 4 games by himself this year.

Nebraska has lost a lot of close games the entire time Frost has been there, so them continuing to be competitive isn't indicative of a team about to turn a corner.

A lot of people in here spouting the same line of “Frost has been losing close games his entire time”. I think it’s a really lazy take. Going through his schedule the last four years, this year is the first year they are competing game in and game out with ranked opponents. In prior years they either got killed by ranked opponents or in the close games for the most part they would score a garbage time touchdown to bring it within 7 points. That’s not losing a close game. This season they have been consistently competitive, which is a very good indicator that they are getting better. Not saying that they will turn the corner and all the sudden next year they will be this years Michigan state, but they are definitely showing some promise, couple that with what you previously mentioned, bad year to hire a coach, and I think this is a good move by the admin. Now I truly believe you have to learn how to win close games, so it’s still going to be hard for Frost to turn the corner completely, but he has definitely got the program in a better place than when he started, a team that would dominate bottom 25 teams and then get killed by a ranked opponent.
