It’s apparent that the top two choices (possibly a third in Alabamas DC) have chosen to stay at their current location, whether through promotion or extra money.

Although options like Schuman, Lake, Belk & others remain, I believe we should keep Coach Jones.

Before everyone downvotes (like I’ve seen on other posts) there’s a plethora of reasons to consider:
1. Relations: He was hired to sooth the struggles with racial issues within the team & have successfully built relationships, whereas Pelini was a massive player relationship fail.
2. Development: This category is massively understated. When our defense should have gotten worse (starter injuries) it actually progressed with backups. (Indicating player buy-in & development)
3. Schematically, the defense was sound, nothing fancy. However, the defense seemed limited. If you watch press conferences CEO made it evident that HE wanted the defense to call a handful of plays. This could indicate his hands were tied (also evident by the mention of blitz schemes being introduced later by analysts & the addition of 3-4 schemes)

Downside: His lack of play calling (which he’s gone through a whole SEC season) & he’s still unproven at recruiting.

Addition: I want to remind everyone that I believe Kelly should be able to make his own hire, & the fact that this defense (Jones) held Alabama to 6yds rushing & 20 points (fans ON THIS BOARD was clamoring for him.

Let’s let the head coach do what he thinks is best.

that's a gigantic downside

and a tiny fraction of upside

This is the lsu DC position. One of the most prestigious coordinator spots in all of college football.

And you want to hire a guy that has 1 season under his belt where 70% was bad and 30% was good? Back up and think about that for a second.

Jones was a desperation hire last year, and has in no way proven to be elite...MAYBE average or above avg. And the defense at LSU should be looking for elite.

He's only positive is he's already here

plus you don't even know if those coaches were offered the job. Whole lot of speculation.

My opinion is that no one on this board can be satisfied.

Last couple of years the criticism was that the coach didn't conduct a legitimate search and hired the first candidates he spoke to (or didn't speak to)

New coach appears to be vetting and interviewing multiple candidates. No real information has been leaked. Despite all that, everyone seems to have developed a major inferiority complex. Folks now think LSU was rejected and/or no one wants to coach here.

--Mind-numbingly absurd.

Kentucky DC had an offer on the table… widely reported

Exactly! Coaching searches take time, must have cohesion and the right mindset or problems ensue. (See Matt Canada, a guy I thought was a slam dunk) I believe Jimmy Lake is the slam dunk in this case but still want Kelly to have his guy.

I’m convinced now that all of you that want to keep Daronte Jones as DC is just fine with being mediocre or are just freaking clueless.

Sorry but keeping Jones shouldn’t even be an option

Was that really the case or did we just read into the fact that this was the first candidate to leak that it must be a done deal?

Freeman and Elko became Head Coaches.

It happens. Have you never been thru a HC Change before.

This is how it goes.

BK is a pro. He will get it right.

He should hire Aranda back from Baylor. I think that would be good.

4 of 5 DC Kelly hired at ND became Head Coaches, 3 at other schools and 1 replacing Kelly. Brian VanGorder was the odd man out.

3 of 5 OC Kelly hired at ND became Head Coaches with a 4th still the OC at Notre Dame.

I think this guy knows good coaches.

edited to correct 4 of 5 DCs

Y’all gotta give this up! We’ve had 1 good DC in the past 14 years. Our last 2 DC were 1 year 1-and-dones. So sell me on the job now: oh, what’s that? We have 5 star DBs who play when they feel like it as long as things are on the up and up. We are not the destination job we think!

Um chavis was pretty damn good.

Since 2008, we had chavis or aranda for 10 out of 13 years. Both were very good to elite. One got poached and the other promoted.

And the last 2 hires were done by O which doesn't and shouldn't reflect anything on LSU itself.

So basically 2008 and 2015 had bad coaches...with steele even being arguable.
