Run it back. Joe Brady as offensive coordinator. Dave Aranda as defensive coordinator. Frank Wilson as Assistant HC. It makes too much sense.

Either that or hire Brady as head coach.

Woody is a Hall of Fame level AD. One of the greatest of all time. Perhaps the greatest right behind Swarbrick.

FIRE ARANDA

Fire Aranda and hire Kevin Steele as DC.

Brian Kelly resurrected a true blue blood ND that was dead nationally and made them relevant again. Also top 3 in wins all time in CFB is now a meh hire ?

He's top 3 (behind Saban and Mack Brown) yet he still doesn't have an FBS national title. He's in his 60s and is in the first year of a 10 year contract coaching in a region he's never been anywhere near.

The hire may work, but it's risky. People say that the money doesn't matter, they can always fire him even though it's guaranteed. But the moment Woody gave him that much money, Woody put his career on the line. He can't just fire Kelly and keep his job. If Kelly goes, Woody goes. So Woody is going keep Kelly around as long as possible even if they struggle to save his own job.

Ranked 25th.

I think OP meant women's golf. They're ranked #18. Good shot at a chip this year.

Head coach is Garrett Runion. Won a natty a few years ago (Division 2). Woody signed him to an 8-year, 40 mil contract so he's not going anywhere anytime soon.
Why is everyone freaking out? Women's basketball is the fastest growing sport in the US according to that Buick commercial. Is it a bad thing to be good at women's basketball?

LSU is similar to the 1980s La Tech program that dominated the sport. Do the other sports suck? Yes. But women's basketball could become a revenue generator in 7 to 10 years.

Instead of complaining, accept reality and embrace it. Go buy some Lady Tigers gear and take pride in being a women's power program.

Good point. But we did steal Mulkey. I guess we are even, for now!

Mulkey was not a "steal." Baylor admins wanted her to leave. She wasn't even on speaking terms with the AD during her final season.

Also, Drew and Mulkey were never close like OP stated. Very different on every level. There's a 0% chance that Kim and Drew spoke about Drew taking the LSU job. None.
Did you not read the post I made literally 15 seconds after the initial post? Scroll up.
For anyone who took my post literally, EVERY SINGLE NAME WAS A JOKE FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.

If we're talking about legitimate candidates, I think Joe Pasternack is one of the top names to watch. He's from Louisiana and has a reputation as an elite recruiter. He's turned UCSB into a great team despite limited resources. I think that would be a home run.

Another name is Baylor Associate HC Jerome Tang. He's been with Drew at Baylor since day 1. Tang's spent his entire adult life in Houston and Waco. He has strong ties to Houston so Baton Rouge would be an ideal location for him.

One downside is that Tang is not a big personality which may make him a poor fit at LSU. He's a quiet guy and very, very, very religious. He wears his faith on his sleeve, so not sure how well that would go with LSU amins.

Other names:
Kyle Keller (Stephen F. Austin). Worked under then replaced Brad Underwood. Wins consistently. Knows how to recruit the BR area.

Niko Medved (CSU) One of the top mid-major coaches. No LA ties.

Drew Valentine (Loyola) One of the top rising young coaches. No LA ties.

Ed Cooley (Providence) If Woodward is looking to shock people, this would be a Brian Kelly type guy. Cooley is underrated and capable of winning a national title with the proper resources.

Edit: my apologies. Pitino does have a national title. I forgot about the '96 Kentucky championship.

Men's Basketball Coach Big Board

Posted by KevinSteeleFan on 3/12/22 at 10:44 pm
Here's a look at some of the top candidates for the vacant LSU MBB head-coaching position.

1. Scott Drew (Baylor)
Has experience taking over a program facing major NCAA violations. Drew actually grew up in Baton Rouge. His father Homer was an assistant under Dale Brown for 4 seasons before taking a head coaching position in the midwest. The Drew family is still close with Coach Brown.

2. Eric Musselman (Arkansas)
Former LSU Associate Head Coach. Great motivator and recruiter with extensive college and NBA experience. Quickly turned Nevada then Arkansas into elite programs. Knows how to effectively leverage the transfer portal to facilitate quick turnarounds.

3. Kelvin Sampson (Houston)
Just a stone's throw away in Houston, Sampson is also a perennial winner. Houston was a joke when he took over and has since turned into a Final Four team with championship aspirations.

4. None of those people are coming. None. Get it out of your heads.

5. Let's talk about plausible candidates.

6. Tom Crean (Unemployed)
Former Marquette, Indiana, Georgia head coach. Big name, older coach. A name most boosters will recognize.

7. Cuonzo Martin (Unemployed)
Will provide LSU with a much-needed diversity hire. Martin's team aren't really ever bad, they just aren't good. There have been rumors of him landing recruits under shady circumstances, but that's no longer a concern due to the NIL ruling.

8. Rick Pitino (Iona)
Like Mulkey, Pitino is a Hall-of-Fame head coach. Like Coach O, Pitino does a great job of hosting recruits and making them feel welcomed. Although he doesn't have a national championship, he did coach the winning team in the national championship game.

9. Jim Harrick Sr. (Cal State Northridge—assistant coach)
Unlike Pitino, Harrick does have a national championship from his time at UCLA. Harrick Sr. may be inclined to take the job since he's reportedly looking for an opportunity to bring his son back into college coaching, and LSU may be the perfect spot. Junior's 10-year show cause recently expired and he's well regarded by his student-athletes as a great teacher.

10. Tubby Smith (unemployed)
Tubby resigned midseason at High Point so that his son could get a job, so he's available. Tubby has head-coaching experience at 16 different institutions, including head-coaching runs at 5 different SEC schools.

Wildcard. Geert Hammink
The former LSU legend and first round pick is currently the head coach for ZZ Leiden in the BNXT, the national basketball league of the Netherlands. He was named 2021 Dutch Basketball League Coach of the Year, putting him in the same company as Dutch coaching legends like Herman van den Belt and Toon van Helfteren.
Why is everyone always out to get us?

National media, refs, [conference name] office. I dont get it.

They will try anything to bust us or try to find something that doesnt exist.

And we all know how bad the refs have screwed us in basketball and football the past few years. We’d be top 3 if not for them this year. Football would have 10 wins the last two years

[Conference name] office wont allow us to get a fair shake

They still have a payroll to meet. Just because you have a new HC doesn't mean you need to bring in a new bagman.

It’s apparent that the top two choices (possibly a third in Alabamas DC) have chosen to stay at their current location, whether through promotion or extra money.

Although options like Schuman, Lake, Belk & others remain, I believe we should keep Coach Jones.

No to Bo. Yes to Carl.

DC: Kevin Steele
DC-in-Waiting/DL: Brick Haley
Associate Head Coach/LB: John Chavis
Senior Assistant Coach/Safeties: Carl Pelini
Assistant to the Head Coach/DBs: Bradley Dale Peveto

Co-OC/TEs: Cam Cameron
Co-OC/OL: Greg Studrawa
Pass Game Coordinator/QBs: Steve Ensminger
Run Game Coordinator/RBs: Jim Bob Cooter

I'm conFLiCTed about that hire.

2 years ago he was the only defensive mind who had a plan to slow down Joe Burrow.

Fantastic post. Kevin Steele would be a grand slam homerun hire. The guy is a defensive legend. He built Baylor football from the ground up before handing the keys over to the Guy who handed the keys over to Art Briles.

Steele's head-coaching record speaks for itself. He's had successful tenures as head football coach at two SEC institutions, Auburn and Tennessee.

Little known fact, Steele has the fewest total losses (1) among all men who have served as HC at two different SEC schools (ahead of the likes of Bear Bryant, Nick Saban, Lane Kiffin, Steve Spurrier, Coach O. and Sen. Thomas Tubberville).

The guys leaving are likely intimidated by Kelly. They know he's going to bring in a torrent of elite transfers which means playing time will be sparse, even for guys like Max.

This has nothing to do with disliking Kelly or the potential new coordinators.
