People never cease to amaze me. I'm gonna go ahead and blame Nick Saban for that.

The guy has set such a high standard that even clearly good coaches like Mullen are doubted

Imho, if Mullen could accomplish what he did at Mississippi State (which I find rather impressive; I remember when Mississippi State was just plum awful year after year), think what he can accomplish at Florida with greater resources. Of course, since Florida is our permanent East opponent, I hope Mullen fails...but, I don't think he will.

I think Mullen is a good coach but the thing about him that has always rubbed me wrong is the way he defended the dirty play of that offensive lineman he had a few years back that stepped (and jumped) on some LSU defensive players.

And the same kid had to sit out a game the previous year for doing the same thing in another game.

I know the head coach shouldn't throw the kid under the bus during a press conference but I just don't like the way Mullen handled that situation.

Mullen is a good coach. He did well at state considering where he was and what he had to work with, but he capitalized on teams overlooking miss st bc they're a historical doormat in the conference that top tier programs overlook. That will not be the case at florida, where you don't sneak up on anyone and you always get the full attention and effort from the teams you will play.

While no one will replicate what Saban has done at Alabama, Dan Mullen will be the next Nick Saban of the SEC. Whenever Saban goes, Mullen becomes the best coach in the conference. I believe he makes the Kirby Smart honeymoon much shorter than we expected.

I don't think Mullen will have Florida consistently competing to win national championships or anything.

I think he'll have a lot of 9-3 seasons. If the East stays terrible, he'll probably make it to Atlanta every other year or something. Every 2-3 years (on average), he'll have teams that are legitimate threats to win the SEC.

He'll do better than the last two coaches, but I don't think he'll be incredible either.

You are correct. Dan Mullen did very well at MSU. Give him three seasons at UF and he will win big.

I agree with the OP. Mullen will be a good but not great coach.

Not to piss in Florida’s chili but.....when Mullen is smiling and laughing on the field after losing to FSU (like he did after losing to a pathetic Ole Miss team) next year don’t say you weren’t warned. Sure he’ll win some games. Hell McElwain won back to back SEC East Championships there. Never liked or wanted a coach that losing, especially to its biggest rival, didn’t bother him.

Maybe Mullen doesn't get depressed after a loss, sometimes the other guys is just better.

you smile, you move on...

He lost a lot too. In fact, he lost 4 or more games in 8 of his 9 seasons at State. Only finished ranked in the top 25 twice. Was only 33-39 in the SEC. He’s a good coach, sure. But nothing he has done at State would suggest he’s about to start competing for NCs anytime soon.
