i don't think it's that far out of the real of possibility. alleva may not think there are any upgrades out there and is willing to spend some extra cash to keep stability in the program. 5 mill for a big time college coach is about to become the norm anyway.

I agree with all of this. Pay Les so we don't have to look like we were the bride left at the alter like MU will

by the time we pay a buyout and competitive salary for the next coach, the economics don't bother me. And if we raise his salary, he better understand that a raised set of expectations come along with it.

ETA: and if he leaves and the LSU fanbase were to find out that more money would have kept him, all hell will break loose.

if he goes 14-0 and a BCS title, then he's worth every penny. It's stupid to give him a big raise right now

If this is the case then there's certainly conditions and "goals" that can be put into the contract. You hear about them all the time if a coach makes it to a BCS bowl or wins a conference championship. There's ways to make it work so both sides can feel like it's a win-win situation. Coach Miles, if what's being said is true about Michigan wanting him to be their coach, will probably go. Just my gut feeling.

if the buyout is removed, then it's probably a good deal, you're giving him $1M more a year as compensation for not having a $15M buyout.

Serious questions to those upset with this-
1) Do you think LSU has the pieces in place to make a run at the BCS in the next several seasons?

2) How much do you think it is worth to keep that shot, if so?

3) Who is available, and at what price, that we could hire right now to keep things moving that way?

I am not saying i agree with it all in the least bit, but he is in the ideal situation to leverage a raise and it could happen.

5 mil is ridiculous for sure.

take 3.5 and get Patterson. No buyout and $5M for LM when he's already got an unbelievable contract is absurd

It's not a raise, it's basic economics and market adjusted pricing. If $4.99MM doesn't keep him here, but $5MM does, then he's worth $5MM. That's how free market economics work.

This.

The buyout is much more important than the actual salary.

And what's the life of the contract? 2 years, 5 years, 10 years?

If Les really wants a raise all he has to do is win the National Championship next season and then he becomes the highest paid coach in CFB.
