re: LSU must follow the model set by Alabama, Ohio St., and Michigan

Remember the inbreds won the lottery that year as Saban fell in there laps, it was nothing great that they did to get him. Sexton even contacted LSU (Skip) to see if there was any possible way Saban could come back to coach here. The big business decision should've been to buy out the last 3 years of Miles' contract and rehired Saban. He was the best when he left LSU to go to the NFL and 3 national titles later how do you like me now. No hindsight, it is what it is, that's why we're in the position we're in now. Hope it's Herman / Aranda !

Agreed as well. Thats why to me it seems like out best bet is Jimbo, due to fact that he has qualifications, and previous ties. But even if not Jimbo, people like Gundy are accomplished HC's. He almost made a natty appearance in 2011 against us, honestly. Not that I'm clamoring for Gundy.
But we just cant settle. Lets go get the best we can possibly get.

I would be thrilled with Herman/Aranda also.

Excellent point. Had they had an opening after the 05 season, they don't get him. IMHO, Chip Kelly would be the home run hire to match up against Saban. Unfortunately, he might not be available for another year.

Do we think he could have had that success back here without the SEC assisting in scheduling and officiating?

Yes Saban win at least 2 titles from 2005 to 2007. He was about to take off before he left.

No doubt he wouldve. Its one of the reasons many tiger fans couldnt get behind Miles.

Outside of the money, the 'models' those schools used to get those coaches couldn't have been more different from one another.

I don't know. The guy admittedly hates to recruit. That doesn't mesh well in teh SEC.

No they actually targeted Saban after Sexton spread the news through the vines that Nick was not happy in S. FLa. But Saban pushed them off until toward the end of the NFL season and Moore was under pressure to deliver something. See my other post in the other thread.
Rich Rod was the actual smoke screen. For a while there they weren't sure so they had to have the plan B - Rich Rod. But negotiations went well of course for them and the rest is history. There was certainly some luck involved. Hey if Saban did not listen to the Miami doctors he could have snagged Brees.
There is a human element in this. When Saban wanted his old job he was going after a job he left with us holding the bag. Some never forgave him for that. Everyone knew he was a great HC. But Miles was winning and there was no vacancy. The PR hit would have been tremendous, if you care about that, us tossing Miles to the side like a rag doll with him winning. Then how could Saban and Skip coexist when they were at a ego war before he left? There would have been some folks in BR asking 'we took this guy back?...Can't we find a way to win without him." Yeah Nicky made some friends out of convenience in La. He also ticked off a lot of people in position of power.

He may wind up being our coach, but I for one, cant see how you can put Fisher in the same conversation as Saban, Meyer and Harbaugh.

I disagree. They targeted the best HC they could find available, and went all in.
LSU on the other hand, was seriously considering Coach O. I.E. we werent targeting the best HC we could find. We were targeting a D-line coach.

The comparison is, that at the time of the coaching search for each team, they went after the best HC possible.
Additionally, if we dont get Jimbo, and Saban retires in a few years, Alabama will target Jimbo likely.
The idea is that we have to get the MOST qualified guy we can possibly get. Please dont settle at LSU Alleva.

The question is are there any Harbs/Saban/Meyers out there? Jimbo would be a good choice, but I think he's in the next tier after these three.
Chip Kelly, Art Briles.. and Mike Leach.
All three have a bit of baggage but all three are phenoms in their own right.
Washington St won 14 games total in the 5 years before Leach.. most of those wins coming against FCS opponents. In his 5 years he's approaching 30 and brought them to 3 bowl games.. they hadn't been bowl eligible since 2003.

agree, all three of those just kinda fell in their laps, stars kinda aligned for all three of those hires.. Im just happy we had saban for those years that brought us to where we are today..

Getting those coaches were more a matter of luck/good timing vs. the schools being willing to pay a ton of money.
Shula had a great 2005 season. He tanked in 2006 and that just so happen to coincide with Nick Saban clearly having second thoughts about coaching in the NFL. If Bama is looking for a coach in 2005 or Shula doesn't have a bad 2006, Saban isn't there.
OSU had ZERO desire to get rid of Jim Tressel. He was just coming off a 12-1 season. If they weren't basically forced to fire him, he's STILL the coach at OSU. Unfortunately they were. However, fourtunately, a two-time national champ Ohio native was available at the same time OSU needed a coach.
Harbaugh had great success his first 3 years in the NFL. No one gets fired with the kind of record he had...unless you and management can't get along. His alma mater just happened to need a coach at the same time he needed a job.
Bama/OSU/Mich. did NOT pull a coach from a good situation like LSU is trying to do with Fisher (and even Herman). Those 3 jobs just happened to be open at the right time.
Maybe Pete Carroll is tired of Seattle. Maybe Chris Peterson would like to try Gumbo. Maybe this is the year that John Gruden wants to leave the MNF booth! But unless those things are true, there doesn't appear to be a sure fire HC NEEDING to leave his current gig to come to LSU.
I have no doubt that LSU will do whatever they can to attract the best coach possible. But if that guy says "no", there's really nothing LSU can do.

Sabah would not have won the NC in 2007. Ryan Perriloux was never going to play for Saban. Never! RP played a lot that season and was the SEC Championship Game MVP. We wouldn't have made it that far with some walk-on playing QB in Jimbo's system.
Back to the OP. If you showed us a Saban, Harbough or Urban that was available, I think we'd be on his doorstep. He's just not there this year. (And Peterson isn't leaving Washington.)

I did, there were reports we were seriously considering Coach O.

LSU needs to follow suit; learn from these programs, and not settle for a head coach. Jimbo would be a great fit in my humble opinion for these reasons. However, there are others out there who work as well. Lets just get somebody that we KNOW is a good coach, please.
I know he's popular on here, but Herman is a much bigger risk than Jimbo. High risk, high reward, of course, but Jimbo is the better option IMO. Recruiting has not been an issue for LSU, defense has not been an issue for LSU. Our issues are on QB recruitment and development. Jimbo fixes that issue immediately.
Look at Strong at Texas, Kelly at ND -- both of those coaches were going scorched earth at their previous jobs and were the "it" coaches (Kelly more than Strong), but look at how that's panned out.

That is why many on here want Jimbo. Best guy out there that we can get this year seems to be Jimbo.
