Who was Raymond before he coached at LSU?
A nobody who had three combined years of experience at Utah State and Nebraska. Some people incorrectly assume that great run of DBs started with him even thought it clearly did not.

That would make sense to me too. Not that you should put too much stock in to this board but apparently Kelly and Peetz hit it off. That's according to this board though so take it with a grain of salt.

You sure about that? Why does the 2020 pass defense all get blamed on Pelini? Shouldn't Raymond share some of that, he is the DB coach? a good many of LSU's opt out / quitters have been DB's.

If you think the other hires are outstanding…that should tell you that “they” must know more than you/me/us…and they/me know what they are doing.

How many DB coaches do you know and how well do you know their coaching?

Exactly! Even if Raymond wanted to stay, Donte Williams from USC and Marcus Woodson of FSU are both better than CR. Downvote away but I’m right. And I think Steeples is a fast riser that could be better than them all.

I'd take either of woodson or williams.

Problem is he took cooks.

I know we like to think resources are unlimited, but there was only so much budget and so many titles to go around. I also don’t think the idea of culture should be so easily dismissed in all of this. That was one of the big points Kelly brought up when the Cooks hire was announced. Kelly knows the kind of culture he wants to build for his program and Cooks understands and fits what Kelly is trying to build. He’s also a very good recruiter in his own right.

I just don't understand the Cooks hire.

Wilson, House, and Cain are all outstanding hires. Cooks oversaw atrocious secondaries in Oklahoma and was going backwards in his career (assistant DC --> safeties coach --> defensive analyst).

You're telling me that LSU couldn't find a DB coach better than Cooks with all the money we're throwing around for other assistant coaches?

Trust the proce ... alignment.

Cooks is making 500 or 550k.

That's plenty of money. Think woodson makes the same at florida state.

There were plenty of db coaches he could've went after.

Woodson only made 475 this year. Cooks got more than him.

Aazar abdul-rahim is who i would've gone after. Boston college under jeff hafley.

Meh… statistically he wasn’t a huge loss.

I actually think our DB improves significantly due to improved technique.

TBD if we miss his recruiting.

I respectfully disagree. I think Kelly knew recruiting may take a hit so he solidified Frank to offset. Regarding coaching, I'm not in the same state of mind regarding Raymond that a lot are. I think our stud DBs were always going to be studs. Nothing Raymond did made them better. For others, I don't think we have seen much development. And the group didn't seem to be a tight group anymore.

I can be completely wrong. This is just my opinion. I do not have any close ties to coaches or players (so no inside info).

I've been saying for years that Raymond was slacking off. Got attacked and ridiculed and downvoted, but it was true. We need to build back what we used to have in DBU...

Do you think he would have left Norvell to make a lateral move for the same salary? He also would have owed a $125K buyout.

I’m really not sure what makes you so confident you know better than Kelly how to construct a coaching staff. For whatever reason, you choose to ignore Cooks’ strong recruiting track record, then tout others with similar or lesser recruiting pedigrees. Everyone seems fixated on Oklahoma’s defensive results while he was there, but completely ignore LSU’s defensive results the last two years in comparison to Raymond. Why is Raymond excused for poor coordinators but no one can see that Mike Stoops was having the same problems adjusting his schemes to combat the Air Raid? What do you know personally about how to coach DBs that makes you sure Cooks is to blame and that some guy from BC really knows how to coach up his players? I’m not saying I know any better. My point isn’t that Cooks is clearly a home run hire. My point is that there are positives that can be seen in his resume and I have no reason to believe Kelly doesn’t know how to evaluate candidates for his staff. He certainly knows better than I do who is a good fit.

Chalky reads 247. He's basically a scout/GM. You can look through the Cooks hire thread and see him ask 3 random disgruntled OU fans about him and go from 0 to 100 on hating the hire within an hour.

Steeples might be a very solid DB coach as well. Sloan is the QB coach.
