BATON ROUGE – Robert Steeples, currently the assistant special teams coach for the Minnesota Vikings, is joining the LSU coaching staff, head coach Brian Kelly announced. Steeples, who will coach on the defensive side of the ball, will join the Tigers once Minnesota’s season has ended. The Vikings are currently 7-8 overall and in second place in the NFL’s NFC North Division. “Robert is an extremely talented coach who will bring tremendous knowledge, energy, and expertise to our staff,” Kelly said. “He enjoyed a stellar collegiate playing career at both Missouri and Memphis, and his experience impacting young people will go a long way in helping create a culture of success on and off the field at LSU. He’s a great fit for us, and I look forward to working with him as we build a championship program.”

Judging by his background (Cornerback at Mizzou, Memphis, floated on practice squads), this is probably your other DB coach with Kerry Cooks

Robert Steeples enters his 1st season with the Vikings in 2021 and 1st in the NFL as the club's assistant special teams coach. Previously, Steeples served as head coach of De Smet Jesuit High School's football team from 2016-20. Under his guidance, De Smet's varsity football team improved from 2-8 in his first season at the helm in 2016 to a state championship title in 2019 in which the Spartans beat Joplin 35-20. In Steeples' last three years (2018-20), De Smet went 29-4 with 20 consecutive wins and had a peak national ranking of No. 8. Steeples was named the 2020 All-American Bowl Coach of the Year after guiding De Smet to the 2019 state title and a 14-0 record. The team returned to the state championship game in 2020 and finished runner-up.

He's an up and coming coach. Four years at a high school going from terrible to champions and then jumped to the NFL. This means he interviews well and inspires confidence in those hiring him. He's also young and you would expect him to have the ability to recruit well. I like this hire.

Interesting hire as a defensive assistant to say the least…coached high school up until last year, where he is the assistant special teams coach with the Vikings. Former NFL CB.

DB or CB coach or analyst?

Steeples made the jump from coaching high school to the NFL last year after transforming De Smet Jesuit High School in Creve Coeur, Missouri, into a powerhouse in just four years. Under his guidance, De Smet’s football team went from 2-8 in his first season in 2016 to a state championship in 2019.

In his final three seasons at De Smet, Steeples led his team to a 29-4 combined record, which included a 20-game winning streak and back-to-back appearances in the state title game. His team was ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation.

Steeples was named the 2020 All-American Bowl Coach of the Year after guiding De Smet to the 2019 state title and a 14-0 record. The team returned to the state championship game in 2020 and finished runner-up.

I know it's just high school, & seems to be private so not sure how they recruit... but that's an impressive coaching job to add to your resume.

Definitely has an analyst type resume. But the release makes it seem like he’s going to be on the field. I’m assuming hes a House guy

Idk much about this guy, but to jump from high school to the pros sounds like he knows what he's doing. This could become a sleeper hire.

Seems like a hire with lots of potential. I'd bet on him being a good recruiter based on his HS coaching success, I like this addition.

If Zimmer is hiring a dude that was coaching HS to coach in the NFL, and then Kelly is hiring him a year later...I am intrigued.

I do too.

We need a total purging and a total housecleaning of the Orgeron stench and an entirely new culture brought in.

This hire aligns with that.

Young, with good career trajectory. Only tie I'm really noticing to House is the state of Missouri.

This is one of those crazy hires that may turn into solid gold. This kind of hire demonstrates the difference between the keyboard experts and those, like Kelly, who actually know what's going on in football coaching.

Brody Miller is saying that House has full control of filling out the rest of the defensive staff. So this guy definitely impressed House at some point.

Probably so.

Very interesting hire. Seems like a really smart guy.

I'd rather a hire like this over a kerry cooks hire.
