Major talent gap, and this past year Vandy was one of the teams hit hardest by covid opt outs. He was playing with backups in many positions.

I would give him a pass on this last year too, but he had the full compliment of players the year before, and Vandy finished 124th out of 130 teams in yards per play allowed in 2019.

I get it - it’s Vandy and they have lesser talent, but Vandy hasn’t always sucked on defense historically.... but recently it’s been really bad.

You probably still think Herman is better.

I think this is a bad hire. Mason’s defense at Vanderbilt the last few seasons were atrocious. How much credit does he really deserve from Stanford?

He's the HC, he wasn't making plays on defense. That's like saying Patterson at TCU can't coach defense just because he's had some bad defenses, even though he's a defensive guru.

The two years he did his head coaching duties and the duties of a DC, his defense was in the top 35, one year being 22nd. Literally the year after he stopped calling defense, it went to 88th. That right there shows you the impact he had when he was calling his own defense, with Vanderbilt talent no less. That's why I hate dumbass LSU fans who get their head stuck up one guy's arse. Remember the O Canada shite on this board during that time?

Mason feels a lot like a Pelini hire.

lol no

Nebraska has the #1 defense in 2009 and #9 in 2010
Mason had a top 22 defense in 2015, at Vandy.
quote:

Mason last top 10 defense was 2014
At his previous stop it was actually 2013, but in literally two years he turned Vandy into a top 25 defense. His first year they were 106th (he had a defensive coordinator). He fires that DC, starts calling his own defense, and they jumped over 80 spots!

Closer but not recent
His last recent defense he coached was 2016, again, VANDY, was in the top 35. Literally the year after he gave it up and got another DC, they were 88th.

This is what he had to say

quote:

After the 2016 season, Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason decided he probably could use a defensive coordinator on his staff after all.

“I felt like I had been stretched as far as I could go, and really, it was just a lot,” Mason said. “This thing was getting bigger and bigger because the stakes were getting higher and higher.”
I said this weeks ago, but Mason would have been a homerun hire. He's an intelligent coach that has coached against spread offenses as well. He could have easily helped teach Raymond to take his place at DC (both being defensive back guys).

Thanks for the answer this board was very excited about an awful dc last year so if Mason is the guy, that’d be good for Auburn
Yeah LSU fans can be a little stupid when it comes to coaching hires. The same ones putting down Mason are the ones who praised Pelini and/or Canada for no got damn reason. The reality is most do little to no research and go off of recent memory or whatever O says is best.

If yall get Mason it's a home run. If we don't get Freeman, and previously had a chance with Mason and turned it down, I'm gonna be pissed.

If true, I think this is a great hire for Harsin. He's not from the SEC and getting coaches with experience in the SEC will be crucial for him.
