Les Miles: ONE SEC title in 6 Years
Posted on 1/9/11 at 12:19 am

And LSU fans are begging him to stay. I know that we've been hard on Les over the past few years, with a lot of people calling for his head. But, LSU fans get a really bad rap for being unrealistic.
Just wondering what other top programs would be hoping their coach stayed who had one conference title in SIX years?
Alabama?
Florida?
Texas?
USC?
Michigan?
Ohio St?
I can't think of any. I'm not saying that they would fire the guy, but I don't know if he would be loved the way that Les is right now.
Just thinking that maybe LSU fans aren't as hard to please as some say, when it comes right down to it.

Who can come in tomorrow that is better? Because we're gonna need someone quick.

It is not that some of us are begging him to stay because we think he is a great coach...it is the timing of the issue that is the problem. Most of the top candidates are gone. Others have signed extensions and it is one month from NSD.

SEC is the strongest conference in the land...the parity in the SEC during Miles tenure has been awesome...a fourth SEC team could win the BCS title in the last five years.
Getting one SEC title in six years is decent, given the other programs that exist in the conference.

If you can come up with someone that is undeniably better that would come to LSU within the next week, pleas contact Joe Alleva immediatley.

I see your point and FIFY.

Wrong. And YOU are a perfect case in point.
But guess what? We're about to get an all new coach to endlessly compare to Saban.

Last 6 years
Auburn
Bama
Florida
LSU
Florida
Georgia
Except for the exceptional run that Florida had with 2 SEC and MNCs - it has been parity all the way!

You are reading me wrong. I'm not criticizing Miles with this post. I think he's done a good job.
My point is that LSU fans are not as unrealistic as people accuse us of being. At the thought of Les leaving, people are kind of upset about it. There is not the "grass is greener on the other side" view that we are accused of. I think that we see Les' weaknesses but understand that it would be hard to find someone to match his success here.
If we were so unrealistic, we'd be happy for him to go seeing as how we'd only won one title during his time here.

This is a great point. There is no question you are right. LSU fans are not that difficult to please when they are compared to Bama fans and some other places.

Especially when a NC seems to come along with the SEC title.

Miles has won nothing as far as the SEC West in 3 years and he is owed 18 million. People here want to extend an already bad contract for LSU and give Les another raise. Kinda unbelievable. Championships even SEC West Titles matter to Bama fans not just wins. I don't know what Bama's SEC record is the last 3 years maybe 21-3 in the regular season? Miles was 14-10? You would have sworn LSU fans won a National Title the way they celebrate a Cotton Bowl win. Expectations are definitely lower in Baton Rouge. Championships of any kind aren't expected or demanded.

1998 - Tennessee
1999 - Alabama
2000 - Florida
2001 - LSU

2004 - Auburn
2005 - Georgia
2006 - Florida
2007 - LSU
2008 - Florida
2009 - Alabama
2010 - Auburn
Those are the champs during the BCS era. No team has more than 2 in any six year period.

This.
But this logic fell on deaf ears until after he beat Saban this year. And fans will go right back to hating Miles if he struggles one bit next season.
Which is why if I'm advising Miles I tell him to get the hell out now while he can. Go chase your dream of being the next Bo Schembechler. Cuz you're never gonna measure up to Nick Saban in the eyes of LSU fans. And the timing will never be better for Miles to leave. He knows we'll never fully accept him and we know Michigan was always his dream job. Part ways now and move on.
Let's hire Zombie Bear Bryant. The Gumps will crap their pants if we put The Bear on the sideline. Bear never had to deal with parity in the SEC.

If we have Zombie Bear Bryant on the sidelines we won't have any more problems with the refs, but recruiting might suffer when he starts visiting recruits in their homes.

But, Boom.

For me it's more about the timing and the recruiting class
I'm fine with Les to UM if thats what he wants but I wish it was not in January and not with this class coming

LSU won the west in 05 lost to UGA in SECCG, and since the 07 championship, the following have won the west: bama ranked 1 at the time (lost to UF who won the NC), bama ranked 2 at the time (and won the SEC and NC) and auburn currently ranked 1 (and won the SEC and playing for NC). The competition has been pretty brutal. I see LSU as the favorite next year unless Cam comes back (highly unlikely) then Auburn maybe. If LSU doesnt win the west next year it will be time for critism. If LSU handles business it would be 3 west titles and 2 SEC championships in 7 years. Not bad.

how many conference championships do those other teams have? And then ask yourself how many bcs championships the other teams in that conference have?
Ohio State has lucked out. In some years the best big 10 teams dont even play each other. Look at where usc is now? Yeah i would trade spots with them in a heart beat.
If Les stays he was a better hire than Meyer. Cus i do not expect muschamp to be able to duplicate his success which would mean we are better off in the long run.

Again, I am not criticizing Miles. I am saying that with ONE conference title in 6 years, LSU fans are satisfied with Miles, thus dispelling the persistent notion that LSU fans ask too much of their coach and eat them alive.
I don't think that Alabama fans would be happy with Saban two years from now if he goes 9-4 and 10-3 and doesn't win the SEC again.
I'm not putting down Miles. I am saying that we are more objective that most give us credit for because he isn't winning a championship every year and we still understand that he's doing a good job considering the competition he's facing and other factors.
This is more about us than it is Miles at this point.
