Last DC search, this board and "insiders" were throwing around all these big names

and we ended up with Matt House, who on paper, was a pretty solid hire. Didn't end up great, hindsight being 20/20, but at the time seemed pretty solid.
I trust BK to make a good hire, but I am not convinced it is some big name that everyone keeps mentioning.

Eh… it was a highly questionable hire at the time as were all of the defensive hires other than Cain.
The others were no names.

Steeples and Cooks for sure, but House had a resume with Kentucky, had Tyrann Mathieu praising him, etc. He was thought of as a really good defensive mind that other programs sought after as well.
He wasn't a huge name, but after the dust settling from the announcement people seemed to say "Pretty solid, safe hire".
Anyways, not really my point, the point is that Kelly isn't necessarily fishing for the biggest or hottest names.

Kelly’s MO was getting coaches that “knew” the SEC and that’s how he landed on who he got.
I think it’s overrated quite frankly. Player development is the #1 trait to be looked especially when you’re wanting to build through HS instead of the portal. Expect to see a DC hire that had a speciality and is known for developing a position group.

What I think happened is kelly tried to hire Brad white. When white turned him down, he probably recommended Matt house.

Agreed but randomly some guys show up with legit info.
Like the guy who said he had lunch with McKinley's dad and he was coming to LSU, only to have it happen very shortly after.

When I made the thread about Winters as a possible guy was just speculation. A discussion about it being a possibility since he has a history with BK and Harbaugh from all accounts is going back to the NFL.
BK likes to hire guys that he has a history with for the most part.

I’d be concerned that BK waited too late to fire House. Should have canned him after the regular season ended. Reliaquest bowl isn’t that important to keep your DC another month
Now a lot of “big names” have been either hired or signed extensions so it makes it harder to snag them, or if you can snag them it will cost a whole lot more.

"Trust" might be a bit strong. I don't trust him completely because he screwed up the last time. So he needs to get this right. Now firing the staff after a miserable defensive year makes me feel better, but having screwed the hires up once makes me a nervous this go around.

I like what Kelly is doing overall, but we are complete arse with Special Teams. It is concerning that it was addressed last year only to go from an embarrassing debacle to below average.
