NCAA transfer portal window begins January 2 — a coach 100% has to be in place before this

The CFP quarterfinals are December 31 and January 1. So this essentially eliminates any coach reaching the final 8 of CFB.

The regular season ends November 29. The early signing period for high schoolers begins December 3. While having a coach in place of signing day used to be a must, I’m not sure it’s a must if you want to be sure you get your guy.

OM has USC, Florida, and State left. Currently ranked #7. There’s a possibility OM reaches top 4 and a bye.

Would love for LSU to get their man and ink the deal ahead Nov. 29. Keep it quiet if necessary, then make the announcement before 2/1.

If it's actually LK and he's making a run, they can try to keep it quiet and leak enough to keep the focus on their man probably being in the final playoff teams. That could prevent some attrition. Maybe.

Gonna be wild. Will make for some good Thanksgiving convos with my extended family.

UGA, Bama, A&M have to lose and OM has to hold steady. No guarantee.

So, I don't know who your favorite target would be, but say they have Kiffin 100% in, but he's in the playoffs and has to finish the season. Do you really pass on Lane to hire someone else? I think that would be a huge mistake, personally. I get what you're saying, and you might not have a great roster year 1 because of it, but if you have Lane saying, I'm coming, but I have to finish this because what coach wouldn't do that.....do you really give that up?

Not trying to be combative, I'm just asking your thoughts on that situation. Assuming you even like Kiffin. To me, getting the right coach is more important than the year 1 roster that can mostly be held together by the other staff and having just enough information that can be shared to know who the coach will likely be.

If they believe a Kiffin or a Lanning is the guy, and you are almost certain they are coming, then you dont sacrifice 10-20 years just to have them in place before Jan 2nd.

I would rather lose the 2026 class and make the right coaching choice than the other way around.

No, you wouldn’t give that up.

But I also don’t think it’s realistic as LSU administrators will never have direct contact with Kiffin during negotiations. And an agent will always be negotiating for their client until a deal is ready to be signed.

I think you can pretty much dismiss the 2026 class.

It’s the portal class I’m concerned about and retention.

There will be a decision before Thanksgiving. To assist with recruiting and maintaining the current roster, expect some of the current staff (Raymond, Wilson, Williams and maybe Baker) to remain in place.

Also, don’t be surprised to see more former players on the new staff like Mawae if he wants to be here.

Good post and the dates are important to consider.

However, as others have stated, I’m much more concerned with the right hire than a single recruiting class. I may have considered the recruiting class more when I was younger, but I’ve learned that being overly focused on keeping a single recruiting class intact rarely - if ever -‘works or makes a difference. Get the right coach and sacrifice a top class if necessary.

The rant is not making the hiring decisions.
