Houston coach Kevin Sumlin has declined an interview request for the vacant Cincinnati job.

"After speaking with representatives with the University of Cincinnati yesterday and today, I declined an interview," he said in a statement. "I am looking forward to our first bowl practice later this afternoon and later honoring our seniors at the football banquet tonight."

The Bearcats are in the midst of leadership change after former coach Brian Kelly left the program for Notre Dame on Thursday.

Kelly posted a 34-6 record in three years at the school and has guided Cincinnati to consecutive BCS bowl appearances in the past two seasons.

Sumlin, who took the Houston job in 2008, came to the Cougars after a five-year stint as an Oklahoma offensive assistant under Bob Stoops.

The Cougars are 18-8 under Sumlin and will play Air Force in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 31.

Sumlin can go undefeated at UofH and not win a NC. So, no real difference.

He can be the next Gary Patterson or he can hold out for a better job. Briles was a retard for jumping at Baylor's offer a couple of years ago.

I agree.

if he keeps producing at houston he'll get some calls from upper middle tier schools in the top 3-4 conferences. Briles low balled himself.

A big east school like cincy could definitely go undefeated and get left out for a couple of one-loss teams.

Is his QB a senior? If not, he will leave when he is a senior

Cincy is barley an upgrade, the recruits left over in houston after the big schools come through is still better than the are cincy has. Smart move by sumlin.

Briles is older though if he didn't go he might not have gotten another opprotunity. Sumlin would be wise to wait for a better offer. He can't top what Kelly did at Cincy, he'd look worse in comparison.

You really think Cincy is going to be in this position every year? Not only will it be tough to continue Kelly's success, but they'll be last in the pecking order of undefeated or one loss BCS teams if they were to get in the hunt again.

says who. it all depends on where you start the year. wvu was a win away from being there too. so was louisville. this big east bull shite about how they will be last in the pecking order is so retarded

Sure, to a Big East homer. Fact of the matter is, more often than not, they'll fall behind the Pac 10, Big XII, SEC and Big 10 champ. The BE had its shot in two crapshoot years and it still didn't happen.

One way or another, Sumlin made a smart decision.

ive been a big east fan for 2.5 years, im far from a homer

point being, louisville and wvu were both going to the title game before they blew it down the stretch

and cincy goes if the big 12 cg doesnt end like it did. as ive said multiple times, the be was better than the b10 and acc this year

Ron you are right the Big East could and almost has made the BCS CG. A team in CUSA has as much chance as the Boise in the WAC.

That said, I think Sumlin is smart to turn down Cincy. Its unlikely he could continue the level of success Kelly has had the last couple of years and would not look as good in comparison. I don't cincy is a destination job.
