Kentucky State University has "parted ways" with football coach John L. Smith, the school announced Tuesday.

The Thorobreds went 0-10 in 2018, which was Smith's third season in charge of the program in Frankfort.

A former head coach at the University of Louisville, Smith won SIAC coach of the year honors in 2016, leading Kentucky State to a 4-7 record and a 4-3 mark in conference play. Last season's team, however, dipped to 3-8 before the program went winless in 2018.

Defensive coordinator Kevin Weston was named as Kentucky State's interim head coach.

Must be some pretty low standards to win awards in the SIAC that or everybody gets one.

And to think that he was the head coach of Weber State for all of a month or so before Petrino "crashed his bike."

He ran Arkansas and Kentucky State into the ground, Weber State is currently ranked #3 in FCS and will host a quarterfinal this weekend

All these schools, including Arky, Louisville, MSU, etc... have paid for his vodka. In spades. The joke is on the schools. Have any of you ever met any of these dipshit head coaches? Even successful coaches. I'm embarrassed that I follow this garbage. These people are morons. Shame on me.

I live 10 miles from there, didn't know he was even there.

Arky will take him back.

Weber St is his alma mater too. I think he was in a lot of debt and needed the big paycheck

Yes, once upon a time, about 20-25 years ago he was a halfway decent coach, although he went downhill fast at Michigan State. He was actually pretty good at Louisville. Something else I just learned on his wikipedia page....he filed for bankruptcy in August of 2012, a few months after being hired at Arkansas, due to some bad real estate investments before the market crashed. Maybe that's why he was acting especially crazy, even for him, that year. Probably also why a 70 year old was still coaching at Fort Lewis, Kentucky for a bad DII program. Looks like he's broke and needs the money. Kind of feel bad for him.

He made millions during his years at UL and Michigan State. If he put all his money into a real estate deal, then that's his fault for not being smart with millions of dollars.
I struggle to feel sorry for people who made millions then wasted it in various ways.

The entire real estate market crashed. A lot of fiscally responsible people were burned when that happened. No one could have reasonably predicted what happened back then.

John L is Alex Smith's uncle. So, not the greatest recruiter, since Alex (Wash Redskins) got only two scholarship offers. One from McBride at Utah (the HC before Meyer) - and one from John L.

Love John L. He took over a 1-10 Louisville team in 1997 and won 7 games and went to a bowl in his first season in 1998. Had a great team in 2001 that beat a top 20 BYU team in the Liberty Bowl. Not to mention the epic win against #4 Florida State in 2002 in a monsoon. Dude is also tough as nails to. He ran with the Bulls in Pamplona and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro

He has definitely had success in the past, just not much recently. He was here at Fort Lewis College in Durango for 3 years but left for Kentucky after his final, and only winning season
