Sources: Former Missouri defensive analyst Jake Olsen will be LSU’s safeties coach, rounding out the on-field defensive staff. He's the fifth hire in the last two weeks.

LSU is expected to name Jake Olsen its safeties coach, sources tell @247sports

Olsen, who was an analyst at Missouri, has been at LSU with new DC Blake Baker the last two weeks. It had been unclear if he’d be an analyst or on-field coach but is now set to an on-field assistant.

Does anyone have any info on his abilities as a coach? Sounds like he is familiar with Louisiana from prior stints at Louisiana schools and is also a good recruiter, but haven't seen much on his coaching abilities mentioned anywhere.

Gambling on the secondary coaches imo.

Raymond hasn’t proven anything in the last 4 years and Olsen respectfully hasn’t done anything at this position.

Let’s hope Raymond is in top form and Olsen surprises us

I mean, he's young. A former DE, he GA'd at his alma mater (Valley City State in ND), coached OLBs at Nicholls, analyst at SW Okie State and GA in ULM, before ending up in Natchitoches as an on field coach, coaching safeties, LBs and ultimately the STC in 2020. The next season he was with us as an analyst then went with Baker to Mizzou.

Obviously, they thought enough of him at NSU to make him the STC in his 20s still. Frankly, that's his most concentrated coaching experience to date. Most of the other time was either GA or analyst, notably excepting the 1 year at Nicholls.

my guess is that Olsen did a lot with safeties at Mizzou… Since that is what Baker also coached at Mizzou

I don’t doubt you chicken. All I’m saying is he’s an unproven guy among well tenured coaches who have a strong recruiting history. Not the traditional fit. I trust BK and Baker to make the best decision. They know they can’t frick up.

Personally would've preferred a TE coach and a designated Special Teams Coordinator. Safeties could've been taken on by a certain staff member (ie. Baker, Raymond, or an analyst).

This hire limits that possibility, not to mention LSU is not the place for training wheels. The guy has moved around a lot (analyst/on field roles) but haven't demonstrated himself to be an elite safeties coach or an elite recruiter.

I wonder how special teams, OC role and TE room is handled. We have room for one guy...

we could've had Bo Davis handle the entire defensive line… But Kelly must've thought it was necessary to bring in peoples… That took up a coaching spot… It's quite possible that the TE coach can handle special teams

they probably feel it's very important to get guys in there that they're comfortable with… I'm guessing Baker is very comfortable with Olsen. I trust their decision-making on this.

I mean dont be obtuse. Weve hired 4 of your staff in the last 3 weeks. Yes two were analysts but its still an odd thing to take so many from one place.

Drink is going to show up in Destin and say:

Thats what I think as well. One name that stands out (assuming Sloan/Hankton co-OC roles) is Wake Forest's Wayne Lineburg. (name is probably too far down the totem)
Wayne Lineburg Wake Forest Coach's Profile

(Edit: He's been Wake Forest's TE/Special Teams Coordinator for the past 8 seasons)

So Nagle the TE coach/ST coordinator?
Just as long as it’s not a ST coordinator only. That is the laziest biggest waste of one of 10 coaching spots around unless said ST coordinator can recruit like a Jeff Banks.

I don’t find it weird if they were bakers guys. No clue if they were or were not. I hadn’t heard of the two analyst before so I can’t confirm there. I get the ha ha baker and people’s left but the two is weird to mention
