Interim coaches

Honest question: Does anyone know either anecdotally or has any sample size or data to indicate how interim coaches perform comparative to their predecessor?

You talking after they get promoted or how they did in their interim season?

How they did as interim. I did find this article and ironically it relates to O at USC. I don't like the way it's laid out and it never sums up the findings, but the 2 things I came away with are:
1. Rarely does the interim get hired (Dabo was an exception and success)
2. Rarely does the interim have substantial success as an interim
LINK
So for O's sake it's a mixed bag. Historically interims are not made permanent, but his success at USC and early success at LSU are above the norm. I just found it interesting.

Very interesting article. Nice find.
Looks like in almost every case, the interim coach did pretty bad during the interim season which obviously led to him not getting hired permanently.
So I guess it's safe to say that interim coaches usually do poorly.

Joe Alleva hired the interim HC at Duke, Roof ended up with a 4-42 record as the permeant HC.

Makes sense. Good teams rarely fire their coach during a season.

Well, interim coaches are usually taking over for horrendous teams.
Then there's the case of Coach O as interim. He took over for a 3-2 team and 2-2 LSU this year. While those teams were performing below expectations, no one could call them bad teams. Of course his record is going to look more impressive relative to the average interim coach.

Well it looks like we are in somewhat uncharted territory. If O continues to do well and the Tigers finish strong he will make a solid case for himself. That being said he does not have history on his side, either interims being hired or his failure at OM.
At the end of the day, if he does do well he really will be at the mercy of Alleva's ability to attract viable top tier alternatives.

Yes, I know that. I didn't say anything to the contrary or that I was surprised by it.

Yep, uber talented teams. I'm different from other LSU fans. The offense O is doing vs Mizzu and S. Miss is exactly what Miles did vs South Carolina and Western Kentucky. LSU will lose against Bama and at least one more team (I'm going with Arkansas on the road), and we can finally put this Coach O as LSU's next HC bullshite to rest. He's going to lose a lot of very experienced talent off this team as well.
When Kiffin was let go, outside of O's 3 point win against 11th ranked Stanford, he didn't have another signature win. USC's classes from 2010-2013 were 3rd, 3rd, 9th, and 13th, with 21, 29, 17 and 12 commits respectively in each class. They were 2nd or 1st in the Pac each year and had a loaded roster in 2013 (albeit depth was not strong). O is taking over some very talented teams as an interim, something the average interim will NEVER have at the college level.

maybe so but it means nothing; absolutely nothing.
most of the data was from schools that were failing miserably due to talent deficiencies and other considerations. past results in these cases simply have nothing to do with future results of different coaches in different situations.
these situations are case specific. i'm not saying hire coach O but not considering him due to this statistical abomination is absurd.

When you figure out who it is for sure and what the score will be let me know. Since you obviously can foretell the future we should make some easy money off of your vast knowledge and clairvoyance.

i have no data to back it up, but if i had to guess most interim coaches take over terrible teams, which sorta stacks the deck against them.
