The guy's a nutcase. He's seriously into the whole pirates thing, with his office..the one recruits are shown into...wall to wall pirate stuff. He's failed several interviews for decent HC positions because his nuttiness shows through. He is a great offensive coach but that does not make him HC material. Top 5 coach puts him in the land of Saban, Meyers, Les, Shaw & possibly Sumlin/Gus/Jimbo....and he is nowhere close to any of those guys. Google the SI article on him a few yrs ago. He's a whacko.

I agree with everything you said except Sumlin. What's he ever done that Leach hasn't?

Top 5 may be too high but I also think its unfair to compare him to those coaches until he gets a shot at a bigger program, which he probably won't get.

This is spot on, and if this doesn't cinch it then that coaching job he did in the bowl game for sure will.

he's a pretty good football coach; better than average; top 25 maybe. Top 5? not even close. what criteria did you select to elevate him so high?

Wazzu has won before. Leach hasn't won anywhere.

Really? Texas Tech? Never had a losing season there and won the Big 12 in 08. I forget what a powerhouse Washington St has always been

What title has he won? Dykes, McWilliams, Tubs, KK all have same tier bowls as he does.

Briles and Patterson have won and built better programs with same or less support. Just because he throws it all over and says stupid things doesn't make him a great coach.

And in 08 MU played OU in KC for big XII title

KU got the orange bowl and MU went to cotton destroyed Arkansas.

Would take Tubs and KK over Leach in a heartbeat

Leach is a good coach but he will never have big sustained success. Not to mention he's an a-hole

Sorry misquote for 08. Tied for Big12 South.

Not saying he's the greatest coach ever but he's not as bad as you're saying either. Before leach got to tech they had only won more than 7 games once since 1978. Leach did it 8 out of the 10 years he was there.

Yes he does throw it a lot and is goofy as heck. That isn't what makes him a good coach. He's an excellent offensive mind. With his offense he's able to bring mediocre (at best) teams into relevancy. Wash St has gotten better each year he's been there.

And if he was in the sec recruiting some of that elite defensive talent and made a solid D-cord. hire, he could be a force.

I agree but it seems with the Mumme, Tony Franklin, Leach type guys they focus on offense only and depend on outscoring people rather than having a little more balance between O and D.

I thought Mumme at SLU would be really good with Woody Widenhoffer as D Coordinator. Didn't work out that way.
