20 years is way too long. Hell, a lot has changed in the past 10 years (remember 2011 LSU-Bama? you see Bama replicating that any time soon thereafter?)
I don't think it HAS to be an offensive guru, but they're getting into the playoffs at pretty good rates. The defensive side is overly-represented by Saban, who is offense-first these days and relies on offense to win.
Look who makes the playoffs the most:
Bama? offense-driven
OSU? offense-driven
OU? offense-driven
Now I'm pro-Aranda, b/c he's smart enough to understand how valuable offense is (like Saban and unlike Kirby), but after Aranda it should be an offensive guru

Oh I think he was for sure an option, but the extent of those discussions between SW and LR will never be known.
The only obvious answer here is that the LSU media personnel and other “sources” have been all over the place because there is no actual information to be had.

Basically.
He got Peterson at UW when UW was his dream job and the only one he'd consider leaving Boise State for. It wasn't some great move.
He got Jimbo to TAMU by overpaying the ever living frick out of him. Jimbo was a bad hire. Jimbo was also our #1 candidate this year, which is where I started getting off the SW train. I'm still worried he's scrambling after Riley's 180 last night and may do something stupid with Jimbo.
