If Miles hires Chavis or Tenuta over Walker.

Does LSU get called out for not hiring a black DC?
Would you be happy to learn that Miles hired a DC only because he is black?
Note: I'm not saying Walker isn't qualified.

Why? There is no special interest group (at least not one with any power) pushing for Native American coaching opportunities.
Besides, as another poster said, it's the HC jobs that get the pressure. Walker is already a DC.
(Therefore, I'm a little puzzled over the Gill thing to a certain degree - he's already a head coach.... If I were Gill, I would be thinking that it's Auburn's loss, and wait for the Michigan meltdown....)

I didn't say I thought it would happen, just commented that it would be in pretty bad taste to cry foul over a school hiring the only Native American Div I coordinator in the country instead of a Black one.

with the state of our defense LSU fans should be cheering for the best DC we can get and not one word should be said or considered about the color of anyone's skin!--

i want a qualified dc first. and if we had two equally qualified dc's I would like to take the African American. I believe it would help immensely with recruiting.

I would be very disappointed if we hired someone "only because they were black." Nobody in their right mind would do that, though.
This is not a question that pertains to Walker. Walker will get the job is Miles thinks he's the best available and Walker wants to take it. He is more than qualified.

I think only a very small percentage of people are making an issue of the black coaching numbers in football. No one else cares.

Walker is a very good d.c. and not because he is black. Charlie strong is a hell of a d.c. and not because he is black. Randy Shannon was a hell of d.c. and not because he is black.
you hire the best guy. Tenuta, chavis, and walker are all successful d.c.'s. has nothing to do about race.
Au is getting it because they deserve it. Turner gill is a successful head coach. They guy they hired isn't.

I had a long tirade in another thread on this issue - so I won't repeat it here. (However, I can't resist the short version - so here goes...)
Schools (for our purposes here, big league schools) don't hire players to be head coaches. They hire position coaches (occasionally), coordinators (pretty often) and head coaches from other programs (most often). Head coaches don't hire players to coach - they promote graduate assistants to position coaches or hire them from elsewhere, promote position coaches to coordinators, or hire them from somewhere else, and so on.
The pool of qualified black coaches has only recently reached a "critical mass", so to speak, to expect more vacancies to be filled with black coaches. It's somewhat disappointing to find that the numbers in college seem to have peaked for now (at 6 for Division I, Bowl subdivision). However, it's encouraging that there is a lot of success at the coordinator level in college and across the board in the NFL, probably better than expected.
So, things should work out, if the market is allowed to work (the only color, in the final analysis, is green.)

And, that's where I kind of want it to drop. Turner Gill will move up to a bigger program, or the NFL. Auburn will sink or swim with Chizik. If it works out, who is to say that they picked the wrong guy(because he's white, of Slavic ancestry, etc. - it's that nonsense that got us into trouble in the first place, paying attention to all of that.) If it doesn't work out, and Turner Gill is coaching Penn State or Clemson, or some other program in a BCS bowl or the big game, while a Chizik coached Auburn team is in the Independence Bowl, Auburn will have learned a valuable lesson now, won't they?

Why didn't Nebraska catch muck flak last year ? Gill was a star QB at Nebraska and was passed over by a defensive coordinator who's head coaching experience consisted of one game as an interim coach,albeit at Nebraska.

Yeah, but they love Pelini in Nebraska. And, it was not a courtesy or token interview by Gill, either. They were the two front runners, and they ended up going with Pelini. I don't think that Gill was too upset about it. If Pelini doesn't work out at Nebraska, for whatever reason, and Gill is available, I think that's the next big hire in Lincoln.
