Looking at the Saints defense it more or less exactly what O wants.

Pressure with 4. Lots of man. 2 high safeties to disguise what you’re doing with 1 of them. Slow down the QB till the pressure gets there

I firmly Believe the only way to stop the Spread offense is to get after the QB and the only way to stop a good spread offense is to get after the QB with as few people as possible.

Yeah. I think it’s a great fit for what O wants. Hopefully Nielsen can install and run it. If so, it’d be a helluva hire and would attract all the d line talent in the world.

Yeah but you have play press coverage which LSU is awful at. The DBs at LSU are better in soft coverage it's a big reason why they got torched this year in Pelini's defense. Ricks is the only capable excellent press CB. Stingley and the rest of the CBs can't play it. Or I should say, not very good at it right now. I guess with an off season that could be worked on though. If you're playing off man coverage they're just going to dink and dunk it to nullify any pass rush.

I think Mcgotherin(sp?) showed a lot at the end of the season and he could easily pass up the veteran CBs like Flott.

so your take is that one of the most physically gifted DBs in LSU history can't play basic press coverage?

Your take sucks

Just because he's a gifted CB doesn't mean he's good in press coverage. No different than a gifted man CB struggling in zone coverages and a gifted zone CB struggling in man coverage. Ricks is an outstanding press CB which is likely why they recruited him for that new fit. All the CBs on LSU's roster could play it with proper coaching. They all have the size and length. Just need to hit the weights and work on technique.

Stingley is usually good in press coverage.

Sure he got burnt by Smith last year but we should be jamming a guy like that if you’re playing press.

DBU is based on the fact that we put our guys in their face man on man. LSU db’s have predominantly played press man since Saban.

Stingley gets beat in press coverage all the time. There's a reason why Aranda liked to play softer coverage with his DBs. You guys have blinders on. Yes, he's a great CB but he still has his flaws.

That's what O wanted this year. The problem is you have to have the DL to do it. I'm not so sure LSU has that personnel just yet. It's much easier to be a DC when you don't have to bring other people up to help out in the run OR rush the QB. I'm not saying that defense or Neilsen could not succeed. It just that expecting that to happen next year might be a bit unrealistic. Logan and Farrell are not great pass rushers on a consistent basis. Neither were Gaye and Anthony. Though they all had their moments.

Regardless, LSU will be playing a ton of 5 DB's. That's how defense is played these days. If LSU is going to go with a "4-3" it really probably needs to look like a 3-3-5. That 3rd LB is really more of a OLB/ILB/DE hybrid. Perhaps that would be a role suited for Clark. He was awful inside last year as he constantly missed gaps and/or was so slow in reacting that he was easily blocked. But, he has good size. Maybe rushing him off the edge and letting him drop into the flats made be more his style.

Bill Johnson was the DL coach in 2019, but that doesn't mean he could run Aranda's defense.

Just as Nielsen is the DL coach for Saints, but there isn't a lick of evidence that he can run Allen's defense.

The "he worked under X so he can run X" assumption has been proven wrong time and time again.

With him though he has DC experience so it's a little different I think. I'd imagine it can't hurt to coach under those concepts when in the past you have DC experience anyway.

It's also been proven right time and time again. Shockingly, when human beings are involved, there are variances in outcomes.

I like how just about everywhere he has been, his teams have been fantastic against the run and applying pressure.

You still have to win in the trenches with all these spread concepts.

The question is, can he run the entire Defensive Scheme, making the right calls at the right time?

Stingley’s dad was on OTB earlier this year and said the same. He said jr isn’t going to get up and press. He is more of a finesse CB. Ricks is the more physical that can press.

I agree for the most part but we have to do better at containing the edges in addition to what you said. We got abused on a lot of short dump offs to the flat and letting runners get loose on the ends. I think we started to improve this toward the end of the season

Stingley doesn’t get beat all the time

And when he does it’s usually when teams run routes underneath him in soft coverage

You just remember when he gets beat in press because it’s a big play when you lose a guy in press in Man.

I dont Think Clark was built to go sideline to sideline.
We did a lot better with those plays when Baskerville started playing. Also Flott stepped up big in a few games in run support which is surprisingly

Lmao I wonder what O's relationship with Sean Payton is. Because we are just trying to be them on the collegiate level which I dont mind at all.

Well if for whatever reason we can't do that this year with the load of DL we will have then it might not ever be done! I just hope that our DL comes in hungry, in great shape and ready to ball out!
