Was Kelly really in the dark until then?

if you watch the Notre Dame AD press conference yesterday, he alluded to noticing that Kelly may be ready for a new challenge...mentioned some freudian slips, and change in demeanor...I am guessing BK had one foot out of the door in mid-October.

BK saying they didn't talk until after NDs last game.
you can't really say "yeah I've been checked out for weeks" while the team was playing games.

you have to read between the lines on these things. There are intermediaries involved so when someone says I haven't talked, or the deal wasn't done until, etc. you can't exactly take that at face value.

thanks but I knew how it worked. my point is more centered on I don't think Woodward and Kelly hatched this scheme in short order as a result of any other candidate rejecting our offer. that's pretty damn impulsive for 2 guys that steadfast and deliberate. That's BS, they have talked and talked many times. It is their nature.

I suppose Kelly's comments can be construed as not conflicting with the comments of the Notre Dame AD. However, it would suggest Kelly was just looking to leave Notre Dame "for the right opportunity" and not just for LSU and that Kelly's agent had authority to explore opportunities and negotiate terms without further authorization from Kelly.

Kelly was definitely putting out feelers to get out of nd. I heard he also contacted Florida.

That’s why he left without even trying to get his offer matched. Baw wanted out.

Sure

Oklahoma and Notre Dame both have every reason to be pissed, and that agent (Trace Armstrong) is going to be hated awhile.

Both of these moves have been in progress awhile, probably since the college landscape has begun to change.
Texas and OU also didn't just wake up one morning and decide to jump to the SEC.

There are big changes underway, something the playoff change from 4 to 12 indicates. Things are shuffling, and some folks have an idea where things are going.
I think we're heading towards a 2-sided format, SEC and ACC on one side, B1G and Pac 12 on the other. Big 12 and the rest will be squeezed out. Notre Dame dragging it's feet about going into the ACC probably pushed Kelly out the door, and Riley thinking he has better potential at USC than Oklahoma now in the SEC.

He might not have talked, but I'm certain his agent was directed to look around.

My guess, things got serious after the Cincinnati game. One close loss (to a fellow playoff contender, no less), and you're on the outside looking in.

In contrast, Alabama has a close loss to A&M (who already had several losses and was out of the picture), and they've hovered around #2. Georgia at this point seems guaranteed to be in, regardless of the SEC Championship. A few years ago Auburn was 10-2, likely to make it into the playoffs if they could beat UGA again.

Kelly has achieved just about everything on his wishlist, except win a natty. He came to understand he needed basically perfection to even get into the playoffs at Notre Dame, while at LSU there's more potential. He doesn't even need to beat Alabama, he's got a back door open with 11-1 and the Bama game is close, and we all know that to be true.
