i don't really know if sumlin is a hire to get a fanbase excited either

his name hasn't even been mentioned should stoops leave. i could see them getting either kelly, mike stoops or the guy at tcu.

If I'm OU's AD, I'm looking at Gary Patterson, Chris Petersen, Charlie Strong, Jim Harbaugh, Wil Muschamp, Kevin Sumlin, etc..as far as fits for OU's style, history, Texas proxy/recruiting.

patterson makes a lot of sense as well. Very successful, knows the region, etc.

only hold up is he'll probably want to coach TCU through their BCS game

that coach's best job opportunity was baylor

Baylor was the first to come after him and he jumped at it like an idiot. Had he stayed, he would have gotten better offers eventually.

And Briles did build that program back up and Sumlin just kept it humming - they won their first bowl game in forever and beat ranked teams for the first time in forever under Sumlin. He'd basically be looking to do the same things at OU.

OU needs to go back to playing smash mouth football IMO. Bring in someone who can bring back toughness and a running game. Stoops can't beat Texas anymore and he can outrecruit Mack Brown either.

what?

outside of adrian peterson, when has ou been a smashmouth football team in the recent past

also, if stoops leves, ou is absolutely fricked imo

The home run hire for OU is Mike Riley.

Dude recruits Texas and does more with less than anyone in the country.

Riley is from Corvallis. Basically no way he leaves now except for maybe Alabama at some point if offered, and even then I'm not sure he would go

No shite? I had no idea.

Well at any rate, if anyone could ever get Riley it'd be a home run. Dude is a fantastic coach.

As my in-laws are all huge OU boosters I can say this pretty clearly. The OU fanbase right now is madder at Stoops than we have ever been at Les. If he left for ND, he would get a "don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out" kind of sendoff. Venables is surprisingly (especially the way they played this year) liked by many booster. I think he would be a horrible hire but he would likely have the inside track if Stoops left.
