How Many times a sitting HC of a big time successful program switches horses directly?

Not many I can think of. Jimbo to Tam is the only recent one that comes to mind.
Urban took time off before going to OSU. Saban went to NFL between lsu and Bama.
Riley to LSU would be almost unprecedented in modern football.

It would borderline be bigger than LSU Bama and Saban love triangle.
Imagine us rolling into Norman in late November with Riley as our Coach. Trip to ATL on the line.
shite will be lit.

It is rarer than spotting a black panther in a Louisiana forest.

It would absolutely be bigger.
Saban didn’t leave LSU for Alabama. Riley would be leaving for a direct future conference foe.
Straight mercenary shite.
Think Tuberville leaving Oxford for Auburn, though he isn’t in conference yet. Still, that’s the kind of bad blood we’re talking about.

Franchione was the first name that came to mind but that was a weird circumstance.
It really is rare. I can't come up with any other ones that really count. Maybe Kiffin leaving Tennessee for USC?

Franchione left Bama for Texas A&M around 2002

Also Jimbo to ATM wasn't just about the cash. There were other personal and administrative issues he was having at that time. This is the one big reason it's hard to believe Riley is coming to LSU. I don't know what would be the catalyst, outside of money, for him to go.

Nolan Richardson had to switch horses at Arkansas

Willie Taggart from Oregon to Florida State
Kiffin from Tennessee to USC
go back a ways and Franchione from Bama to A&M
Bret Bielema from Wiscy to Arky

I don't like pulling a coach from an opponent. IMHO it makes us look like we can buy anything instead of doing homework and finding OUR long term diamond in-the-rough.

Not that it worked out but Willie Taggart left Oregon to go to FSU after one year at UO. Neither program is on LSU or even OU’s level, but similar to a jump between the programs that Riley would potentially make.

not necessarily “big time”, but within the conference
Houston Nutt from Arkansas to Ole Miss
Tubofshit from Ole Miss to Auburn

I know a guy who met this lady and her baby daddy’s stepdad saw one.

Last major school job opening in the SEC and done by the same guy who is now the LSU AD running the search.

Uh, precedent was ... well, see above ^
It definitely happens. Kiffin from Tennessee to USC was another. LSU has done it twice with Saban from Mich St and Miles from Okie St. Mike Leach from WSU to Missy St is another recent one.
Depends a bit on how you define "big time successful program" but if we're talking P5 job to P5 job, there are other recent examples, like Franklin from Vandy to PSU, Herman from UH to UT, and on and on.
It happens a bit more than people realize. Just not common to see a guy leave from a program that is considered to be regularly in contention for the absolute top (titles/playoffs). Then again, the playoffs angle is relatively recent and somewhat changes that dynamic.

Only other one in recent history I can think of was Dana Holgosen at West Virginia when he left for Houston.
It was a pretty bizarre move but it worked pretty well for him
