Either 5 years (long enough to get the Michigan house in order and pass the torch to another coach while going back to the NFL) or for life.

I said this in another thread, but being an alumnus likely keeps him there five or so years. But unlike Saban, who is the inevitable comparison, he's still young and has more than a decade of coaching left. I could see a return to the NFL given the right circumstances and being able to leave Michigan in great shape.
Why would Saban be the comparison? More like Pete Carrol. You know, Someone that actually experienced great success at the pro level. SABAN, spurrier, Petrino, and Schiano are in the same boat.

Saban had a higher winning percentage in the pros than Carroll did before his second stint.

I don't know, maybe the fact that Saban and Harbaugh would be linked forever over landing record breaking deals at the collegiate level. Or the fact that both won at places that aren't exactly easy to build programs at in the environment each found Michigan State and Stanford. Maybe even the fact that both had success at small schools in Toledo and San Diego respectively.
While Pete Carroll is an amazing coach, he isn't the obvious comparison. He only had one collegiate head coaching job, no less at a place with tremendous resources. And was fired twice in the NFL, before finding the third time to be the charm.
Harbaugh is essentially were Saban was at 13 years ago, though he already has the NFL head coaching experience to boot. It will be interesting to see what he can do with more resources at the collegiate level, as Saban did at LSU and Alabama.

You act like some guys don't prefer coaching college.

Some do.
But don't kid yourself into thinking that if Saban had gotten the Fins to the Super Bowl, he would have still gone to Bama. A guy like Saban and Harbaugh that would make them more driven.
I'm not saying Saban was terrible or about to get fired in the NFL either. i still hold that man in high regard for what he did at LSU. But he realized real quick you just can't go get 25 Joe Five-stars and beat other teams up like he did in college. But if he had more success in the pros I believe he would have stuck it out a few more years.
Damn Culpepper.

1 month, until the Falcons announce him as their new HC.

Carroll wasn't nearly as successful in his first stint, compared to Harbaugh.

Agreed.
It says a lot about where he wants to be given the recent reports that friends and family are trying to get him to go to UM while his heart lies with the NFL. If Michigan ends up getting him in the end, UM fans are kidding themselves if they think his situation is anything like Saban's was and that he'll be a college lifer.

I believe part of the family stuff that his wife wanted ironed out was him being there for the long haul. They have grade school children and she does not mind moving but doesn't want to move again. I would guess he will be there for the remainder of his career.
Not a snowball's chance in hell. As much as Michigan fans don't want to believe it, Michigan is a stepping stone for Harbaugh until he decides he wants to give it another shot at a Super Bowl.

Michigan is holding out for JH. I think Jim will decide to stay in NFL. Then Miles can come in and take the job. That's my take on this. It makes Miles look like he wasn't lying about not being contacted by Michigan thus easier for him to explain that he couldn't turn down His beloved Michigan in there hour of need.

Lol clearly likes it more? Guess that's why he left Stanford. Because he likes it that much
He's not going back to college unless he's run out of the NFL

I think some coaches do just prefer college though. I don't know if Saban and/or Harbaugh do.
I also don't buy into the idea that the NFL is tougher as a coach. They're completely different. You can be a good CFB coach and a bad NFL coach, or a good NFL coach and a bad CFB coach.
As for Saban and the Fins, maybe you're right. But I'm talking Harbaugh here.

Saban's "process" talk was getting ridiculed by the fans and the press in Miami. He wasn't commanding the respect he thinks he deserves and was getting second guessed, another thing he despises. He needs adulation or he gets pissed off.
I remember listening to one of his press conferences in Miami and it was brutal. He was not pleased.
