How about Derek Dooley as new UT Coach?

He's done a good job at Tech and will no doubt end up in the SEC one day. With all the facilities at UT he would make them a powerhouse.

Running the athletic department and getting better facilities for the school, yes
As a head football coach, meh

yeah 4 wins in the WAC = excellence

He took Tech to the Indy Bowl last year which they won. This year he had a lot of injuries. He is a good recruiter. Also he had some close losses and gave Boise State, the No.5 team all they could handle.

Why do idiots want a coach who just went 4-8 in the WAC?

Tech lost 5 games by a total of 23 points:
Utah State 23 LTU 21
Idaho 35 LTU 34
Boise State 45 LTU 35
LSU 24 LTU 16
Fresno State 30 LTU 28
In several of the games Tech lost in the final minutes. LSU beat Tech, but statistically, Tech beat LSU in every phase of the game. So, Tech could just as easily won the games. And agsin, they won the Indy Bowl last year.

17-20 in 3 years 12-12 in conf.
I'm not saying he's a bad coach but he's definitely not in line for a bigger job right now.
So did LSU does that make Les's year any better?

No it makes Les worse. With LSU's talent, Les should have blown out Tech. My argument is that Dooley has done a pretty good job with talent that could not even walk on at LSU. Again his team was better prepared and played better than LSU. Tech had a lot of injuries and when you dodn't have the depth, it makes a difference. I would have hired Dooley over Kiffin had I been the AD at UT. Also, don't dismiss the WAC, its a pretty tough conference. Boise State beat TCU that many experts thought was better than Texas.

"I really like his play calling ability" - phrase uttered by every uninformed college football fan in Louisiana after Tech beat LSU, 16-24.
4-4 in the WAC and a Daddy who coached in the SEC= complete dominance at LSU. Cuz, you know, LSU has the best talent in the country.

At least Derek is paying his dues, unlike Lane, who rode Daddy's coattails.

So they want a coach who loses all the close games....
Posted on 1/14/10 at 11:30 am to pittboss33
dooley has to actually win those close games before he can get a big job.

Dooley is a real loser. Walked on at UVA and became a multi-letter winner. Went to law school, practiced but didn't like it, and got into coaching. Learned under Saban, pro experience, HC and AD experience. Wife is a doctor, dad is a legendary SEC coach--why would anybody want to take a chance on a clown like that to represent the program?

All he has to do now is win more games and he might be in line for a higher profile job.

from tennessee's rivals site:

We are hearing that there are more than those two names that might be potential guys at least. One name that has been floated today is Louisiana Tech’s Derrick Dooley.
Dooley is a Nick Saban disciple. Obviously, many feel that given Saban’s success his blueprint is the right blueprint for college football programs. Dooley is actually the head coach and athletic director at Louisiana Tech. Dooley was an assistant with Saban at LSU and followed him to Miami before he got the head coaching job at Louisiana Tech.
In three years at Louisiana Tech, Dooley is 17-20. Now, I don’t know that it ever becomes anything serious, but that is a name that has at least come up for discussion the last 24 hours.
Kirby Smart's name also has been tossed out a couple times this week, and Kyle Whittingham as well.
Tennessee would love to get things done as early as tomorrow and no later than Sunday.

I don't want him to get the UT job, hopefully he can stay at La Tech until LSU is ready to call him up
Posted on 1/14/10 at 11:46 am to Tiger1955
Tennessee is an SEC program, remember?
Posted on 1/14/10 at 12:07 pm to Ric Flair
That's true, Ric. Apparently he doesn't have a 14 ct gold horseshoe stuck in his a$$ like wittle Lane does. Maybe if he can convince Vince to join his staff, it'll help him land one of the best jobs in the country. I'm not sold on Dooley being a homerun hire for a big-time program, but I like the fact that he is paying his dues.
