re: Starting Right Guard
Posted by southern man on 9/9/10 at 8:29 am to omegaman66
Hebert is not an every-down quality SEC offensive lineman. And this has nothing to do with effort (no problem there) on the holding call (BS or not--those things happen).

Branch is the next best guard. They should play him at RG--easier and better transtion than moving a true center who is underweight and recovering from a busted leg.
re: Is everyone discounting how well UNC played during that second

Herbstreit said it lete--why was the TE getting clean releases? He was 4 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than LSU's biggest DB, and he proved he could catch. Unless he fell down on his routes or dropped the balls (last two plays), it was a 7-yard pitch and catch.

Lonergan to guard and Hebert to center makes both positions weaker. The next best guard (Branch/Williford/whoever) should start. Hebert played as best as he can, but he's out of position, under-weight, and coming off of a broken leg. The last thing JJ needs is pressure up the middle.

I thought he was the backup RG. It is unbelievable if the best recplacement is one of the weaker links from last year's OL, playing out of position, and recovering from a broken leg in spring practice.
re: What's going on with T-Bob?

PJ plays this year unless he gets hurt. Les is coaching for his job, and he knows it, so he'll play the best players. Even if it means big mouth radio idiot will have something to bitch about.

Somewhat related, Jacob Hester and Buster Davis must have said good things about Miles. You know Rivers called his brother and asked for some due diligence before he committed.
re: Why Does Everyone Think Lonergan Is An Upgrade?
Posted by southern man on 8/16/10 at 5:06 pm to Ethan Martin
Apparantly so did the coaches last year, which was why LSU was 110 out of 120 (approx.) of all D-1 teams on offense (with three senior RBs currently in NFL camps).

On a broader point, I think Les is done playing guys unless they give LSU the best chance to win. He understands that the last two seasons are no acceptable, and he isn't going to risk the team's performance just to make sure some talk radio guy in New Orleans takes it easy on him. Along the same lines, I don't think he'll redshirt as many players this year either. Whatever ammo he's got, he's going to use it which is a good thing.

He's bigger, stronger, and doesn't have a knee surgery and broken leg in his recent past. All 5 OL positions should be improved. Josh and Barksdale are a year older, and Hurst, Lonergan, and Blackwell are better than last year's starters (I know Barksdale switched sides).

Who is the guy PJ Lonergan blew off the ball in the first Big Cat drill? It will be nice to get strong center play this year.

Mack Brown called the plays in 1982.

Lonergand beat out Hebert in the spring before Hebert got hurt.
re: Texas fans, are you guys mad...
Posted by southern man on 6/11/10 at 1:30 pm to TigerMyth36
Texas is hard to get into because (i) there's jillions of people in the state and many, many qualified applicants but a finite number of spots, and (ii) it is good value. It isn't Harvard, Stanford, Duke, etc. Remember, Vince Young got in and stayed eligible.

Vince Young must have had a bad day when he bombed the Wonderlick test.
re: Recruiting in TEXAS and EXPANSION
Posted by southern man on 6/10/10 at 4:15 pm to alange
I think A&M would be able to sell local (east Texas and Houston) recuits that it is better to play in SEC stadiums than on the west coast (even though A&M would largely be playing the same schools in the PAC-whatever). LSU would still do well, but I believe that we could really use A&M-to-the-PAC-whatever to our advantage especially in the Houston area against A&M.
re: Recruiting in TEXAS and EXPANSION
Posted by southern man on 6/10/10 at 3:41 pm to CharlesLSU
A&M would help the SEC overall (gillions of alums, $$, Houston and Dallas markets), but hurts LSU's recruiting in east Texas and Houston. If A&M goes west with Texas, it is good for LSU.
re: Why is Jerry Stoval so forgotten as an All-time LSU great?
Posted by southern man on 5/28/10 at 1:23 pm to RogerTheShrubber
Stovall got chickenshitted by Broadhead and the yellow BOS who wouldn't stand up for him. You don't treat your own like that. He was a great player, a good coach, and a better person.
re: Academics question
Posted by southern man on 5/13/10 at 10:03 am to SOL
Only because there are more qualified applicants from in-state who apply at A&M and UT; sheer numbers drive the rejection rate higher at those schools. The 10% rule (which guarantees admission at in-state schools in Texas) forces many qualified high school graduates to look elsewhere, and is a boon for schools like OU, Arkansas, and LSU which have smaller population pools to draw from.

Whose arse was that that PJ Lonergan kicked?
re: Why is spring practice so early this year?
Posted by southern man on 2/25/10 at 12:01 pm to Choupique19
I think Miles was burned last spring when Ridley got hurt, and wasn't ready until mid-season. I remember him saying that getting spring practice over as early as possible maximizes the chances that guys who get hurt can get well in time for the season.
