When I look at hiring, everybody has flaws. You measure strength and weaknesses then come to a conclusion.

I’ve always been a high ceiling guy. I know others who want a high floor. Are you safe or willing to take a risk?

Based on my own opinion there are three high ceiling guys:

Riley: Highest ceiling, lowest floor. You will win, you will be a national power house. Needs SEC defensive talent to reach potential. Best offensive mind in college football. He would be my #1 target as well. No brainer.

Napier: Great recruiter, just a good overall college football mind. Likely surround himself with the best staff. Runs a program like Saban. This is a massive jump for him. From what I understand, Woody called Saban and asked about Napier. Nick gave Woody a glowing review. His rise to be a head coach wasn’t a straight line. (Value in that too.) He bet on himself to land this job.

Kiffin: 2nd best offensive mind. His can write better plays in his sleep then most premier OCs, but his teams lack discipline and he is overly aggressive like he has something to prove.

Three Highest Floor:

Jimbo: great recruiter, great overall coach. 9 wins is the floor. His offensive style is his downfall and his calling card. That’s a scary combination.

Aranda: brilliant defensive mind and culture creator. His team will be disciplined and organized. He is a proven average recruiter. We will lose out on players that other guys would have hit on.

Cristobal: Great recruiter, great CEO style leader, but no expertise. I think he is Jimbo, but without the offensive know how.. he will bring in a great OC. I really like his current staff. One of the better staffs in college football.

All of these guys would be successful at LSU. I don’t doubt any of their ability tied to LSU’s talent pool and brand.

I’d rank them as such:

Riley
Napier
Cristobal
Aranda
Kiffin
Fisher

The highest floor, highest ceiling is Urban Meyer.

The Jaguars are going nowhere. Apathy has set in. And, most importantly, the players don't respect him. Just like Saban, Urban is a college guy. You can't just "recruit" your way to wins in the NFL and the messages that resonated with 18-21 year old kids in college don't do so with professionals. Many of whom are earning more money than the coach.

Like Saban in 2005, it was worth a shot for a successful college coach to give the NFL a try. But that league is not for him. On the other hand, he's one of four people alive with at least 3 national championships on his resume. 6 years at Florida. 2 national championships and three top 3 finishes. 7 years at OSU. 2 playoff appearances (would have played in the BCSNG in 2012 had they been eligible), a national championship. NINE (9) losses.

Yes, he has his issues. But if he wants to get back into the college game there is NO place better suited for him to win now than LSU. Even if he were to only stay 6 years, if you were guaranteed that in those 6 years LSU would make the playoff 2-3 times and win at least 1, maybe more NCs, EVERY LSU fans would take it. Even if they now want to sit on their high horse and say no to Urban.

Please stop the Riley stuff...they paid O 17 million to leave they are not buying out a 15 mill plus Riley and then give him a huge contract....It's LSU...We never pay them till they win..

Every coach out there is a roll of the dice. No one knows who the next best coach is...

We pay stupid money and another shite's the bed we are deeper in the hole and stuck...

Napier is the best bang for the money...Realistically..

Dear god....How many times do we have to say this. There are coaches that coached with Saban for years and years that still can't recreate what he's done. We need to stop comparing coaches to Saban. Even if Napier is hired (which I hope is not the case), if people really have expectations that he's going to create an Alabama like situation at LSU, you're putting the highest expectations imaginable on a guy that's been a head coach for a total of 3 years at a Sunbelt school.

Aranda: He is a proven average recruiter. We will lose out on players that other guys would have hit on.

Where is this proven? This was created on this message board as a negative for him, but I haven't really seen it actually proven by anyone. Have you looked at some of the players he was directly responsible for recruiting that he got to LSU? It's a pretty damn good list. Napier's list of recruits that he got to Alabama isn't any more impressive than the list that Aranda pulled to LSU. Just my assessment.

ETA:

If this is true, and Napier is some rising star in college football, why didn't Nick promote him to OC instead of pulling Sark out of the back office? I'm genuinely interested in what makes Napier so appealing to everyone. Is it because a bunch of people said he's Saban Jr. and everyone latched onto it? Or is there something I'm missing in his past that makes him the next big thing.

+1

There's been tons of ex-Saban assistants that have gone elsewhere and done nothing yet somehow with the ex-WR coach under Saban he's supposed to know the secret sauce that no one else knew before him.

I agree with all points.

The question Woody has to answer is pretty simple in mind. Where's balance? Who can he reasonably get that can build this program back up to a championship level?

Honestly, I think there are 4-5 coaches that can pull it off. The question then becomes about longevity and who can sustain it for a long period of time. For me, that rules out guys like Jimbo.

I think the coach with the highest floor and highest ceiling is Jimbo.

This is the worst pro-coach write-up I've seen during this search.

So you are guessing? Sale will likely want the ULL job. So who else do you think will put their careers in a rookie's hands. EdO struggled to get coaches here, so your hunch is no guarantee.

Again this means nothing. Its hard to imagine a G5 coach that is so close to being Saban, still hasn't won a conference title game in Year 4 in the SunBelt conf.
quote:

I understand, Woody called Saban and asked about Napier.

Again you have resorted to speculation. I'm starting to wonder of you have any facts that you can provide to support a leap like Petersen, Meyer, Brian Kelly made, but most other could not.

Scott did call Saban, but it was about Saban coming, not Napier. Saban actually recommended Tucker, not Napier. But Scott was not looking for who his main competitor would like coaching here. Saban also once recommended Houston Nutt for LSU. So this point is nowhere close to being a positive for Napier.
quote:

He bet on himself to land this job.

And he bet wrong, because his demands to go from a G5 school to full control of an elite P5 school ended all discussions.

Woodward has never, EVER hired a coach on potential. When Napier has some trophies, have him call back then.

Don't mind your list but why hire another CEO coach in Cristobal? With openings popping up Moorehead will get looks to be a HC so it's back to the hiring for Cristobal and we've gone down the whole OC/DC hires. It's just not a long term strategy especially if you start losing like O did and he couldn't attract any top name because he was a dead man walking.

Before we paint Kiffin as always being overly aggressive, Kiffin was swinging for the fences Saturday because he knew that a loss at Auburn would take him out of contention for the SEC West.

Not to mention that all of Kiffin's best receivers were out for the game, while his QB has two sprained ankles. Anyway I found Kiffin's aggressiveness to be refreshing after sitting through the 2013 debacle in LSU's Natty game against Alabama. At least Kiffin went down fighting. Which is far more than we could say for LSU and Les Miles.

Further, one game hardly defines a football coach's entire career as a lot of people are trying to imply. As Kiffin is by far the most qualified of all the realistic coaching candidates currently under consideration, as just a week before Kiffin's Auburn game, Kiffin with a lot less talented team relative to LSU, literally kicked LSU's asses in the dirt.

Finally, I disagree with the dude who started this thread because Kiffin has the best offensive mind in all of college football and Kiffin, unlike Lincoln Riley, is actually available. While Lincoln Riley is only a pipe dream for some very delusional fans.

Jimbo’s best days are behind him, not ahead. That is why I like Aranda and Napier - they are continuing to improve.

Woodward’s not looking to find the next 9 win a year HC.

No doubt and a great post.
I’d easily say the highest ceiling for championships would be Meyer then Riley.

Did you mean highest floor for Riley?

To add to what somebody else said about Urban. Theres no way he's staying in that toxic situation for long. The players dont respect him, theyre losing, and have no signs of improvement. Urban could be very well looking for a soft landing spot back in college to save some face and not get fired in disgrace. Woody isnt doing his job if he doesnt feel out Urban's interest before anything else.

I would also add Bob Stoops to high ceiling/high floor but questionable interest. Woodward should do his due diligence here as well. He's as big a name as anyone and without the baggage.

Honestly im expecting Aranda or Napier and wouldnt complain about either.
