I want to preface this, none of this really matters anymore, Brian Kelly is our guy. Just a discussion.

During the presser, reporters asked in a few different ways to try to understand the timeline of this hire. BK said the convo lasted 45 minutes and he was sold.. but nobody knows exactly when that conversation took place.

Looking at the evidence, I think it was Sunday. I really do believe Woodward had something in place for LR. I made a phone call last week to a very large booster whom I met when I worked for Jindal. He said “Lincoln Riley.” The reporter I trust the most said “Lincoln Riley.”

Yesterday Chicken posted something along the lines that said “if this was in place long ago, then coaching hires should be done quickly.”

Well, Lincoln rolled out with all the staff he wanted to USC. Meanwhile, BK missed out on all his staff here at LSU. Circumstance does play a role in this, as ND does have a shot in the CFP.

Brian Kelly isn’t the guy I would picked, but I wasn’t in the room. I will say this, I’ve attended about 50 LSU pressers under Les.. BK handled himself 100 times better than Miles ever did. Don’t even need to mention O.

There is clear vision and communication of that vision.

LSU should win a lot. BK will set the standard. That standard will be excellence.

he has to say this to save face… Lincoln Riley made a similar BS comment.

there's no doubt that USC and LSU were talking to their candidates well before they were hired

I agree. Lincoln was Woody's #1 target, but sealing BK as a backup? In 45 mins? Almost makes Woody look even more impressive.

Chicken, you still think it was BK the entire time?

it is always interesting to me how far in advance things truly happen regarding coaching hires.

while i have a hard time believing that multi-millions dollar deals happen in 2 days, sometimes you have to have plans b/c in place...just in case.

Jaime Howard said on Moscona a few days ago the Kelly said that he had spoken to Woodward after their USC game. Obviously, we have no clue what was talked about in that conversation, but the process had started that long ago. whether Kelly was plan a/b/c....i really do not care.

he will correct the locker room, which is the biggest task in front whomever the hire was going to be.

Big time ADs must have "feelers" out at all times in this business. Crazy.

I think you’re right.

Kelly and family didn’t make this life changing decision over night.

College Football is a small world. 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon everywhere. More like 3 degrees.

BK will need a young staff to help with recruiting. I think more coaches stay on than previously planned, which I’m ok with..

I think the deal was done in principal with his agent as a back up when Jimbo didn’t take the job, and the final push happened Saturday evening.

I’ve done it. Why do you think I moved to Iowa City?

A challenge and money I couldn’t say no was offered.

Not saying it was over night, but I think BK was looking for a new challenge. LSU was a perfect fit.

Exactly.

There is absolutely ZERO chance that a contract of this magnitude was discussed - with someone at a major program in contention for the CFP, mind you - in 45 minutes.

This had to have been an ongoing thing.

Now....perhaps there was a 45-minute Zoom call, but I can assure you there had to have been lengthy discussions with his agent prior to and the only way that happens is if Kelly ok'd them in the first place.

An agent won't spend hours upon hours negotiating with someone if he doesn't have the go-ahead.

Agents are, as a rule, usually attorneys. They operate under the same billing principles.

Bk has plausible deniability since he referred all inquiries to his agent

Another angle on this.. BK said multiple times during his press conference yesterday that "it wasn't my search". He was technically deferring that question to Woodward & I don't think the press ever readdressed those questions to Woodward. It would be interesting if the press ever got the chance to ask those questions to him directly.

O was fired on 10/17. That game was on 10/23. Jamie said, "(Kelly) told me while we were there that Scott had approached him and he didn't think he was interested in it". Kelly was still recruiting for ND so he would have to say that. I doubt any deal was done that early either way, but this shows that Kelly was a top target from the beginning considering that SW approached CBK within days.

You really think it took 45 mins to decide on one of the biggest decisions of your life? It took weeks. Now if he was coming from a smaller school, than maybe. It doesn’t take 45 mins to decide to leave notre dame after 12 years with ur team in the playoff hunt.

This is incredibly naive to think that a $100M deal was worked out in 45 minutes, to pry away a coach who had a shot at the national championship with his current team, for 30% LESS than the latest hire.

Logically (most likely):

1. LSU has a target candidate before they fire O.
2. Soon as they fire O they reach out to said candidate's agent.
3. They reach a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) and have a deal in principle with clawbacks (penalties for backing out) as well as an NDA (non-disclosure agreement). This makes sense, as at this time ND doesn't look like a realistic contender to go 11-1 and be in the National Championship Discussion
4. With said deal in place, USC announced they are firing their coach. (it was reported their first interest was Kelly, and he said no...is it because he already had a deal with LSU?)
5. Kelly's agent also reps another coach, Riley.
6. In order to get more money for Riley than for Kelly, his agent floats rumors of LR to LSU for 12.5/year. (this does NOT violate the NDA, but makes other schools aware of the RESET coaching pay market)
7. In Woodward fashion, (he did this with baseball) he floats smokescreens. Loudmouth boosters start echoing...hence all the smoke here.
8. USC pays 30% more than Kelly is getting paid at LSU, but Kelly already has the MOU which means he can't go back and re-negotiate.

Deals worth 10% of this take weeks/months in the business world. Don't feed me this line of crap that this was a last minute hail mary. This was planned well, executed well, and caught everyone in the media by surprise.

Chicken is right in this one...JMHO anyway.

Not saying it takes 45 minutes. And none of this was what the post was about.

I’ll tell you this, I think Kelly was looking to leave. He found the fit and took off.

{perhaps Kelly does truly respect ND and made it a point to not persuade his coach's to seek employment at LSU. Perhaps Kelly does respect his team and the goals they set. Could it be that Kelly is more honorable than Riley?
