I'd take it. You've got 7 years to develop your system w/ virtually no expectations. After that, you can move on to an elite program and compete for a championship.

Agreed
Vandy isn't a bad job for the right coach. If you just get to a bowl every few years, people will be happy and it's in a major city. The big negative is that they dont pay coaches, but it looks like they are this time

Maybe Vandy is trying to become even somewhat relevant in the SEC?
But in all seriousness, I could see GM recruiting some strong players out of the south and getting together a solid team. Even LSU and Bama's leftovers are better than most of the country.

Damn, and to think we were bitching about Vandy being a weight on the SEC about 2 weeks ago. Looks like they're trying to step it up.

Did Cam make Malzahn a rich man? I'm Malzahn ignorant, what's he done before Cam to get this kind of attention?

In 2007 and 2008 Malzahn was offensive coordinator at Tulsa and had the number 1 offense in the country both years. I think he had over 2,000 yards passing and over 2,000 yards rushing or something insane like that. I don't have the exact stats, but Malzahn has been very successful everywhere he's been. Also remember, when he first got to Auburn....Auburn was a run first pro style offense running lots of I Formations. He brought in a completley different style of offense.

See Arky, Tulsa, and Tulsa.
If you remember, GM came from being a HS coach to be an OC at Arky for Nutt. There was speculation that the only reason he got the job was because Nutt wanted his qb, Mustain. Well, there was some falling out between the two and he left for Tulsa.
Turned around the Tulsa program pretty quick and the rest is history.
I would also say that he is credited with the creation and the genius behind the wildcat formation.

If Malzahn fails at Vandy, Vandy will be the doormat of the SEC for eternity because not only will they still be Vandy, but they'll also be broke.

see what Chimlin said.
Cam is a huge asset but truthfully their Oline is terribly underrated. That being said, Malzhan is a true innovator. I think he's the real deal.

vandy has plenty of cash flow with the SEC's current media contracts

i don't know how much "turning around" he did
the one thing i'll give malzhan is how he's changed his offense
when he left springdale and went to arky, he had a 4-5 WR, single back spread/ace set with lots of deep routes. it did not work
at tulsa, he kept the offense, and it worked b/c CUSA doesn't exactly have elite pass rushers
towards the end, he started adding spread option
he goes to AU and tries a half spread/ace, half spread option offense for 2 years that is good, but not great. gets cam, goes full spread option, and his offense takes off against real competition
he's the anti-crowton in terms of adding things and coachin em up

That's GM's greatest attribute. He changes his O wherever he goes to use what tools he has. Most coaches won't do this.

Vandy actually only takes smart kids. They will never, ever be competitive in football with that "Harvard of the South" attitude!

i just hate when GM fans go "high school offense. will never work in the SEC"
well the offense he did bring from high school was a disaster in the SEC and is more for lower-level competition without pass rushers
he's adapted, and i give him a lot of credit for that.
i also believe he's the real "head coach" at AU. when i see malzhan and chizik on the sidelines, gus is telling gene what to do

Yeah, I'd guess recruiting at Vandy would be a bitch...How does Vandy compare to Notre Dame as for admission standards?

No school will ever be successful with that mentality
