Greg Schiano should be a hotter name for openings

What Schiano did at Rutgers was downright amazing. Add to that the fact that he has NFL experience (though it was a disaster) and is currently coaching a lights out defense for Ohio State, and he should be a much hotter name than he is right now.

I remember reading the article Peter King did on him during his year off from coaching when he visited a ton of teams and programs to shadow winning coaches and learn their processes.

quote:

Schiano’s main job, however, has been preparing for his next interview. He has traveled everywhere from Columbus to Tuscaloosa to Foxboro, refining how he’d run a college program or NFL franchise. He says only about 15 percent of what he has looked at is related to X’s and O’s, which includes weekly pre-dawn film sessions with Jon Gruden. Instead, he is focused on organizational and macro topics such as, “Can I be just as demanding of people, but make their quality of life better?”

Schiano visited Alabama, where his friend and former assistant Mario Cristobal is the offensive line coach and assistant head coach. He came away impressed with the synchronization of Nick Saban’s program, not to mention the facilities in Tuscaloosa. Schiano found himself sneaking cell phone pictures of lockers, noting their size as fodder for his next stop. When Alabama players left the practice field, they all had customized smoothies waiting for them, high-calorie for guys trying to gain weight and low-calorie for those needing to drop pounds. “Everything is systematized,” he says, “from nutrition to academic support.”

There are smaller things Schiano picked up along the way. He loved how Princeton’s defensive meeting rooms all had footballs attached to springs and nailed to the walls. When defensive players walk into the room, they whack the ball as a way to establish a culture of forcing turnovers. “Definitely stealing that,” Schiano says, proudly showing a picture of the set-up on his phone. Schiano liked some of the corporate approaches Al Golden used at Miami, specifically using staff e-mails for things like distributing cut-ups.

There are rumors he is the leading candidate for Oregon. Knight was in Columbus for The Game last weekend, and apparently it was more than just to pimp Nike

He would be fine at a place like WMU but he's not getting a big time job.

I've always thought Schiano would be a great hire for a big school. I'm in the minority.

Schiano was a great motivator but terrible with tactics. He can recruit with the best of them and he can lead a program to wins.

He'd be good for a bigger program, not necessarily great. I'm sure his time in the NFL sharpened his skills.

Schiano was responsible for the most bush league behavior I have ever witnessed in the NFL with the Bucs. He had his defense hit people on kneel down plays at the end of the game. That guy is a joke.

The game you are referring to was a one score game and the Giants were on Tampa's side of the field. If Tampa would have forced a fumble and recovered, Tampa would have had a chance to win. It'd be a different story if it was impossible for his team to win. But I dont see anything wrong about playing hard until the game is over.

Btw OP I agree. Schiano is a great coach, and I wish LSU would have at least considered him

I wanna say that Insight Bowl was Rutgers' first in about 40 years. What he did there was basically the equivalent of someone taking Kansas right now and building them into a consistent bowl team.

Rutgers had been to one bowl in school history before Schiano. The 1978 Garden State Bowl.

Look at the W-L records at Rutgers since he's left and you'll what a phenomenal coach he is. He would be a big time for someone. I honestly can't believe he hasn't gotten a head coaching job yet.

Schiano was a guy I really wanted Ray Tanner to interview last year. He'd be a great get for someone.
