I certainly am not, but I'll answer your questions with plausible explanations.

quote:

if he is so sold on Brick as a solid DC option, why is he walking around getting rejected more than a beta wearing a tie dye dinosaur shirt if he's "all in" on brick? venables, pendergrast, durkin, and now shoop have all rejected us. we're on option 5 (or 6 if you believe the muschamp rumors).

Plausible explanation. Of the guys you listed, only Pendergast was within the realm of being hired and that was thrown out when he demanded to be able to bring in his own staff...none of whom had recruiting ties in the south. With that said, Miles is playing the political game. He had always listed Brick as a possibility. He knows that it is a responsibility of his to perform a thorough search. He knows that the few people above him who could hammer him need to be on board with this hire. So, even though he's wanted Haley all along, he needed to be able to make that hiring recommendation along with sufficient evidence that this was a national search and that none of the other candidates were a better fit.

quote:

our brand is being tarnished with every rejection
This is meaningless. A quality hire would solve that.

quote:

les's image is taking the same hit. there is no way a man of pride like miles would willingly submit to that kind of ridicule if he was really sold on Brick as DC

He has NEVER cared about this. And, he knows that winning solves this anyway. And, he knows that losing destroys his image regardless of what happens with this process. In other words, if Miles knows his only chance of leaving LSU on top is to win...and he thinks Haley gives him the best chance of winning...then he'd do whatever it took to make that happen.

I just wish we had a earlier start on this search. Seems like we've ran into guys that were simply more unrealistic than we thought.

If we find out early, we probably get in on Muschamp.

Choctaw, can you give a general rundown of why you're still such an ardent Miles supporter given the recent trajectory of the program, the consistently putrid Offenses, and the history of poor game management?

Just curious. TIA.

The idea that a brand is tarnished by a coaching search is a made up things for fans. The reality is that you interview any number of candidates for a job opening (even a coaching job) and then you select one. The idea that other people making personal decisions tarnishes the brand is a fantasy that message board people like to spout because it fits the troll narrative. Even media people like to mention it, but we all know they have no idea how the hiring world works.

This is the only way that the fan base will accept the promotion of Brick.

Not a great option, but at least somewhat acceptable.

I am in if that means bring on Coach O. If not, then no I am not on that option. Coach O is an elite recruiter and that is sorely needed here at LSU with Saban raiding Louisiana. Also, he is a very good D line coach, so that is a plus as well. I was never sold on Chavis being a great LB coach, so the big thing we miss is the game plan and sometime adjustments that would be made during halftime. Outside of that not much of a loss with Chavis.

God I hope a mystery candidate emerges, but the latest name (Oregon DC) doesn't even seem remotely possible.

That one I just don't see happening. He's been at Oregon his entire life as a student and as a coach.

What do we know? Typically, not always, but typically when a coach makes a hire for DC or OC, they most likely make a hire with a coach they are familiar with.

Durkin goes back to Michigan with Harbaugh; McElwain hires a DC that he spent time with at Alabama; Miles hired Cameron.

When Les goes into an interview with Bob Shoop, he has no background with him. Never talked football with him before. So it's tough for Les to trust him enough to offer him a position on staff in which Les' job security hinges on the hire.

Then, PSU comes back with an ultimatum for Shoop.

And that's where the problem lies.

So, I look at who has been connected to the position that has connection to Miles: Steele and Haley.

And that's s terrifying thought, because I believe Coach O does not end up on the staff no matter what.

i'm not freaking out

i've been very calm

i've been very positive about the reported candidates up to this point

we're just running out of potential candidates that are easy to support as quality hires

I'll answer this for myself.

#1. The "program" is as healthy as it's ever been. If Miles walked out today, there would literally be zero rebuilding needed. People who talk about the dip in the program don't know what they are talking about. They are confusing record with program...kind of like confusing weather with climate.

#2. I believe LSU absolutely can win and win big with Miles. I don't think he's perfect. I don't think he's the best coach in college football...or the best coach we've ever had. But, LSU bring a ton to the table itself and with all of that added up, LSU can win a NC.

Having said that, I think this hire is HUGE for Miles. If he makes a bad hire, I would support a very quick decision to change HC. It would make zero sense to give Miles another opportunity to fix it. He's not going to be here long enough for that to make sense. And, remember, I'm a Miles supporter.

He won't walk out anytime soon unless He and Alleva get in a public blame context over this fiasco and Alleva wins.

I disagree. I think LSU very well might have done that given the candidate and the need to start lining up options for 2-3 years from now when Miles leaves. The real question is whether or not Miles was willing to do that. I'm skeptical.

And, LSU was a much better fit for Muschamp than Auburn is. There is a pretty clear path to a HC job at LSU.

Miles has $1.2 to work with, and the choice is up to him.

Well, yeh, Miles gets the blame if it doesn't work out.

Why doesn't Miles give Dunbar a sniff then? Is he a NFL lifer or something?

This is a good post, but I'll point out two things.

#1. Miles hired Chavis who wasn't a part of his family.

#2. If Orgeron doesn't end up on the staff, it won't be because Miles doesn't know enough about him to trust him as a coach. It will be because Miles doesn't trust him, in general. There is real risk if Miles brings on Orgeron. Think about O's relationship with Wilson. Think about O's contacts in the BR media.

If Orgeron wanted the job, he would be spending all of his energy trying to convince Miles that he's on board with him and that he'll be 100% in line with what Miles wants to do.

1.2 is enough to make a quality hire. This is on Miles. It's his responsibility and his decision. And, if he found someone who was a HR type of hire, I'm sure he could get Alleva to up the budget.

This aggravates me a little. I'm not a big fan of the coordinator pay and the realm it's at but I take my hat off to Auburn for knowing their weakness and their willingness to swing for the fences to solve it. I believe their willingness to do so is their AD's confidence in their head coach. LSU is one of the top money programs in the country and we have the money to keep up with other programs and we should most certainly do that on our defensive side of the ball. Much of LSU's success is due to fielding strong defenses. Whether you argue talent or coaching, defense is what has made LSU during Miles tenure. Knowing that, I would much rather pay our D coordinator top dollar and tighten up on the offensive side. I don't think who our offensive coordinator is matters much with Les as the head coach. We are going to be a power run team and I'm fine with that but we shouldn't be paying top dollar to offensive coaches for the results of the current offense. I want to know why you claim LSU wouldn't be willing to pay a proven DC and recruiter the 1.8?

I'm starting to believe there's a stand off of sorts going on, I know he did upset a lot of people with his interest in UM this last go round.
