Very good hire. Can't believe Denver got rid of him after one year during the McDaniels era.

Yesss...I wonder if this means we're running the 3-4

Nolan is a top 5 DC in the NFL, great hire.

They didn't get rid of him. He knew McDaniels is a douche and wanted out. McDaniels let him go because he thought he could get the same results without him.

Win for Auburn, and a win for the Falcons. Great day to be me!

Good hire but it won't matter unless the new HC retains him next year.

It would take a colossal meltdown by the Falcons next year for Boy Wonder and Blank to fire Smitty. Maybe the next year, but they're still too enamored with him at the moment.

the last time the falcons (4-3 personnel) hired a 3-4 coordinator, they didn't do too well (and it was the 3-4 guru wade phillips)

I don't think it would take that much. If we miss the playoffs I think he's out. If we make the playoffs and get our asses kicked in the first game again, he's out.
That's possibly just wishful thinking on my part though. I've been wanting him fired since about a week after the 2010 season ended and he made absolutely no changes. I honestly don't think he would have fired Mularkey if the Jags hadn't offered him.

He made a lot of questionable decisions this year have really worn some of the luster off for me as well. Not saying I don't have confidence that he can't right the ship, but my opinion is nowhere near where it was a little over a year ago.

Nolan is a great DC but I'm concerned as to how well he and Mike Smith will get along. They have vastly different schemes. Nolan has never really run anything other than a 3-4.

Didnt they work together in Baltimore?

yes but those differences in scheme still exist. Smith runs a 4-3 while Nolan runs a 3-4. I just don't see it going well. I also think Nolan was a WR coach while Smith was in Baltimore. Nolan moved over to D later.

Nolan runs a hybrid defense. Chances are he will start out running mostly a 4-3 with some 3-4 mixed in in particular situations and then gradually transitioning to more 3-4 concepts as the roster is rebuilt to accommodate it.

What he just said.
