Contractually is it even possible to “lock in” a coach that’s currently coaching elsewhere

obviously I understand there could be a handshake agreement or some type of memorandum of understanding. However is there anything legally that could be signed (by Lincoln Riley for example) that would give LSU some type of guarantee while he’s still coaching OU? If not how could Woodward be so confident he isn’t being used?

Initially, new coaches usually sign a Memorandum of Understanding (or Agreement) which is negotiated and is binding. But the actual contract is signed months later after the attorneys agree to the language.
My wife worked for the law firm representing LSU and mentioned how actual coaching contract talks drug on and on.
I’m sure a contract attorney can do a better job of explaining it.

Interesting. My question I think would be - how do you sign a MoA while under contract with another University? Or Do you have to technically first eject from the current job? In other words, is it even possible that Riley has really “signed” as some seem to be suggesting or would that not take place until he resigned as OU’s head coach and what we’re actually talking about is a potential verbal agreement.

Right but the second Riley “puts in notice” to OU everyone will know about it. That clearly hasn’t happened yet.

That’s not necessarily true. Depends who the replacement will be. They want to keep the recruiting class as intact as possible.

The MOU probably has language along the lines of "following end of the season or by this date, LSU will pay the sum of the contract buyout blah blah blah"
MOU states he'll take the position and it'll be after LSU fulfills the buyout obligation

Someone asked a question trying to understand a little more about contract law, others answered. I'm guessing he's a little upset at their bull this week for something and is taking it out on this board
