Chris Petersen is in the process of negotiating a long-term contract extension with the University of Washington to remain the Huskies’ coach for the next decade, The Seattle Times has learned.

The extension could be for as long as 10 years, sources told The Times.

Financial terms of the new deal are still being negotiated, but it is expected to make Petersen the highest-paid coach in the Pac-12 Conference. The athletic department is looking at “creative” options as part of Petersen’s overall compensation package.

Money, however, is not Petersen’s primary motivation in getting an extension done. He wanted first to make known his commitment to UW — which should stifle speculation about him possibly leaving for another coaching job.

Just as important to Petersen is securing raises for his assistant coaches, several of whom could be attractive to other programs with more high-profile openings after this season.

Football isn't even going to be played 10 years from now

And yet we'll still get at least one new thread everyday asking if LSU should go after him

I heard an interview with Dan Hawkins the other day who is really close with him and his family

He said people don't know Chris like he does and he's not wired like a typical coach. He said he and his family are in their paradise in the NW and he said if he retires there he will be a very happy man. Said he's never been an ego or money guy.

That's cool if true. I like when coaches do that. It really is a great job

Peterson is gonna make Washington great again.

UW got a stud. They'll be competitive under his tutelage. Enjoy it.

Football will still be played. It will just be a lot slower and a lot less athletic. After Trump deports all African Americans back to Africa. I predict a rise in the Asian presence in the game.

We can't thank Pat Haden enough. He "stole" Sarkisian from us, Petersen contacted our AD about the opening, then 3 days later he was announced as head coach.

But he's currently negotiating a 10 year contract that will make him the highest paid coach in the PAC-12. What a crock of shite!

He deserves it. It's not like the Pac-12 has any top coaches anymore. Harbaugh, Kelly, and Carroll were the peak, but nobody besides Petersen and maybe Shaw comes close to those guys.

As a Washington fan, I love it. Guy is a lifer and seems like the next Don James. Washington will be back to being a power in the Pac-12 for the long haul.

LSU has had contact with reps of Peterson.
I said it on here and got blasted a month ago.
His interest was gauged by LSU.

Normally, these silly contract extensions aren't worth the paper they are printed on. Chris Peterson is maybe the only coach I actually believe will stay at his school for the duration of his contract.

He seems like an awesome guy and waited an awfully long time before finally leaving Boise State. He also happens to be a great coach who will likely keep UW at/near the top for a while.
