Chavis Had the #4 Ranked Defense in the Nation in 08

I wanted to bring this out because I think that this point is being lost. Tennessee's defense was dominant this past year. Their offense was ranked in the 100's. How hard is it to have a defense that good with an offense that bad? The talent level at Tennessee has dropped a great deal this past year as well. So, with Fulmer out and all the chaos going on at Tennessee, Chavis coaches the #4 defense.
How do you argue with that?

I agree and I'm all for Chavis getting the job but that #4 ranking is yards allowed and teams had a short field to work on, however, they only gave up 16 points a game which I think says a lot more considering the situation.

You can't, he's a good DC. Who has said he's not a good DC?? I think he's universally respected.

They also had the ball a lot more often because the offense was inept and kept going 3 and out.
#4 defense and 16 points per game with depleted talent, coaching chaos, and an inept offense in the same league against the same competition where we gave up 25 ppg and were ranked #34 in total defense says all I need to know.

From what I can see, Chavis is the absolute best DC we can hire. Walker looks exciting, but the Chief delivers tough defenses and with our talent, we can win the BCS again. I hope that he is the announcement.

The original poster asked how you could argue with that. I did.
And that isn't really the same. It was freshman Matt Mauck against a defense with arguably the 2 most dominant defensive linemen in the NFL today. All they had to do was stop the QB Draw and they are playing in the Rose Bowl for all the marbles.

Sometimes breaks go your way and sometimes they don't. Everyone knows that, but I'd rather be in a position like last year to be able to get to a BCS bowl and Chavis is a guy who can prepare our defense and have them ready to compete at that level. He'll probably stick around for a while too, I hope.

I think most folk are looking at his body of work the past decade. He's had some good, average,and some not so good defenses.

Chavis has been DC for excellent Defenses and average ones. What has been the constant, Chavis. What has been the variable? Personnel. Given the personnel at LSU, I believe he can coach a Defense up to "top 10" more often than not.
Will it be constant top 10's, NO. Other factors other than coaching and talent enter the equation. Attitude and team chemistry are two major variables. That is why I believe Orgeron would be another excellent addition.
Quite possible, Luck plays as impotant part as anything else. To some extent you make your own luck and CLM has done a good job of that prior to this year.
IMO: The Hat, The Wiz, The Chief, The "O" would make a HUGE statement. It would solidify our recruiting class even further and announce that we will be in contention for SEC and BCS championships for the foreseeable future.

Chavis is the perfect fit for LSU. He's pretty thick skinned as well which will serve him well here.

You are telling me that Chavis is somehow to blame for these defensive linemen not making the plays.
Yet these players played well enough and were developed enough to both go in the First Round.
Do you think he had them playing out of position? Bad Technique was taught against the draw? Were they running a stunt that opened the lane?
What makes you think that this play is an argument of any sort?

chavis doesn't make adjustments
his D was schemed/called for the rohan-led passing attack
we ran a 6th grade offense with macuk and chavis didn't/wouldn't/couldn't adjust to stop it with superior talent
