Okay, so he's horrible because he had the #70 ranked defense last year.
Or, he's great because he had the #4 ranked defense this year.
Which is it? Did he forget how to coach last year? Or, maybe there was something else going on last year.
Here's the point: With a ton of adversity and declining talent, Chavis turns out the 4th ranked defense in the country this year. A defense that gave up 16ppg. In the SEC.
Sounds pretty good to me. I think he knows what he's doing.
Or, he's great because he had the #4 ranked defense this year.

yeah, if you have a good defense 2 out of every 5 years than its clearly just some fluke reason that you have those 3 shitty seasons.

No, my whole point was that in no way do you have any business losing to the Matt Mauck led 2001 LSU Tigers. The talent on that UT defense was unreal, and they still blew it.
No stat you throw out there will change my mind. I would prefer someone else. That's just me though.

We don't need the top dc or the best dc. We just need a proven good dc and that is what Chavis is. We had a terrible co-dc this year and Chavis would be an upgrade. You throw in Coach O who is one of the finest recruiters in the nation and a very good D-line coach and we have a recipe for success. Miles is surrounding himself with a great coaching staff and that is what will make the difference when it's all said and done.
We hire Walker and he is here for at the most 3 years(assuming he is a success), then we are back in the same situation.

Our performance as a team is apparently a zero-sum game. We have been exceptional on defense when we suck on offense, as in 2005 and 2008. When we are at least passable on offense, like in 2007, our defense is usually pretty lousy, like 59 points to Florida or 41 to a bad Bama team lousy.
Chavis's biggest problem is his seeming inability to adjust. There are numerous examples of it. The 2001 SEC Championship game is a good one, as is the 2001 Georgia game, but more recent ones would be the 2007 South Carolina game and 2008 UCLA game. He likes to go into soft coverage with minutes to go. UCLA used it to pick us apart and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Georgia did the same thing with the famous hobnail boot garbage in 2001. Chavis gives too much of a cushion because he is afraid of giving up big plays.
There's a reason Vol fans referred to 3rd down as "3rd and Chavis" during his time here. And it wasn't for a good reason.
Still, he's so much of an improvement over the two clowns you have now that it's not even funny.

Ok lets not hire him based off of one game 7 years ago where the starting QB went out and the backup QB brought something the defense was totally unprepared for.
