Off The Bench said today that this name is one they’ve heard. O may as well pack up his shite if this is the hire.

I think he will ace in recruiting for sure.

So you fire Pelini for the same thing in Strong only difference is he has black skin? Yeah, sounds about right.

off the bench - they don't know shite

He hasn't coordinated a defense in at least a decade. He's not a DC for a reason. You need a guy who is proven to be able to shutdown modern offenses in NCAA. It's true you don't forget how to coach a defense but as you saw with Pelini it doesn't mean you can adjust your scheme to the evolution of the NCAA. There's no proof Strong could do that even if he could. Would be a terrible hire.

Use to be a lights out recruiter and DC but that boat has sailed long ago. If you're going to go with that much risk you should've never fired Pelini to begin with. It would be even better to a take a huge risk on someone like Reeves who you don't even know how much involvement he has in the defensive gameplan.

He fits what they want. It has been widely known they want a minority as a DC. Fans like the OP will melt for some reason but he would prob do a good job here.

Sounds like a comfort zone pick for O so I could believe he's on the list. If he has any coaching history with O or ole Pete recommended him sign him up.

I don’t think Charlie Strong would be a good hire but these guys don’t exist. No one is shutting down offenses with consistently anymore

He was a good coordinator 13 years ago.

If he still was he wouldn't be an analyst for saban he is also 60.

You guys wear me out wanting these old dinosaur retreads.

True but you need a competent DC against modern NCAA offenses and there's plenty of examples where it can work just fine.

You guys are judging candidates off of what they were as a HC instead of the position that O is hiring them for? LOL cmon man. Charlie Strong is a top notch DC. Maybe not a great HC but dammit was such a good DC

This is the kind of shite that results in one losing all credibility.

The "I am 1000% convinced that INSERT CANDIDATES NAME will ruin the program" post is lazy as hell at best.

When was the last time he had a good D even as a HC? You have no other body of work to go on with him since he hasn't been a DC in so long. If anything, it validates concerns he can't do shite in modern NCAA which is why he's in an analyst role.

This is off the bench throwing shite on the wall hoping it sticks. I doubt he's a serious candidate. He maybe be on the list but at the bottom if they strike out on everyone else.

10 years ago. Pelini was a great DC years ago too.

The game has evolved. If O wants to take the chance, go ahead. I read where strong was about to interview for a position coach at UF. I haven’t been hearing strong’s name generate interest at these big jobs. Sarkisian has been working with him all year at Bama. Why isn’t he trying to bring him over to UT if he’s that great?

LSU just seeking after retreads after missing on Freeman. How do you not target some guys doing the job at a high level right now? Arnett/Reeves/guy at BC? You make Arnett tell you no and go to the next candidate.

Strong is a tier 2 hire and is half a rung being hired above pelini as far as excitement.

Wow... this is a shocker! Then again, not really. It has been stated they wanted to make a minority hire because O shot his mouth off on Fox News.

If they hire Strong, then they might as well fire O now.

Go get Tem!

The college game changes too rapidly. Strong hasn't been a DC in over a decade.

You want a guy that is a DC RIGHT NOW and doing well. Not someone that is 60 and did it 12 years ago.

They already took a risk on offense so I don't see why that would stop them on a DC. Looking at someone who impresses them on schematics and seems innovative+young would be a good place to go. No interviews have come out either so I'm not sure what's going on. The only interview LSU has done is Freeman that we know about. If they didn't already have a short list when Freeman said no then they shite the bed. This should've been organized weeks ago and should've been thinking about a short list months ago when the boosters were ready to buy him out.

Worst case scenario is they're back channeling coaches who are telling them thanks but no thanks so they're starting to reach. I think it might be a possibility too with the investigations and knowing O will be canned soon if he doesn't get it right. That on top of no interviews being lined up for the past few weeks outside Freeman. Money only gets you so far.

In 2009

Pelini was a great DC at LSU in 2007

It would be nice to hire someone who coached a great Defense in the past 5 years.

I doubt strong is returning to UT as an assistant

charlie strong is a name but hasn't fielded a good D in some time now.
