And if stupid arse Ogeron wouldn't have destroyed all of LSU's leverage by making it clear to everyone that he wanted Canada out LSU may not have had to pay the $1.7 million buyout.

Canada could have been quietly pushed out the door with LSU happily negotiating a lower or even no buyout for another school to take him. Now, Canada could have just sat out the next two years and taken LSU's money, but it was a very good chance he wanted to coach somewhere next season. All that goes out the window though when your bonehead HC makes it known he's firing the OC he hired and signed a big contract.

I have been saying this since we had the buyout. The dude was a coaching commodity whether we want to admit it or not. It was a guarantee he would have a job this upcoming season. His buyout was $3mm over twice the remaining life of his contract, which would be $750k/year for 4 years.

Illinois was paying their last OC $650k/year. Even if that stayed the same (likely would have gone up), we would have owed Canada $100k/year, quite possibly leaving us with a $400k buyout or maybe even nothing. But NOPE, we "negotiate" a $1.7mm buyout. $1mm by 1/31/18 with 20 monthly payments of $35k guaranteed after that.

LSU is paying their "HC" $3.5mm/year, their highly sought after DC $2.5mm/year, and just paid their fired OC ("that was hand picked by the HC"), $3.2mm to coach ONE year!

We couldn't fire Miles because of the optics of a $12mm buyout, so instead we are now on the hook for (and I may be missing one?):

Miles............$9mm
Cameron......$600k
Canada........$1.7mm

Total: $11.3mm

And we very well may have Alleva's buyout (~$1.5mm) and Orgeron's buyout (~$6mm) to add to that next year! Our state is horrible at managing money, and it seems the university is equally as inept.

I think his offense will work well there

well,it better because he and Lovie are going to hit the road if Illinois doesn't win next year. Lovie has gone 5-19 in 2 years there. That's shows how much Canada is wanted around the country.

This is exactly why Bonnette and the athletic PR team (lol) instituted a policy at the Ensminger announcement presser that there would be no questions allowed about Canada. There is a confidentiality clause as to both parties (LSU and Canada) and they knew stupid 0 wouldn't be able to keep his mouth shut.

If you really care about LSU you want the cajuns buddies network experiment to die as fast as possible so that LSU can clean house and hire a real coach.

Dont forget Ensminger is about to get a huge raise based on SEC salary avg and not what the market would pay him.

Turner and Zook won fewer games in each of their first two seasons there. Not saying Lovie will turn it around like those two did, but Illinois knew they had a major rebuild when he was hired.

Also, Lovie's buyout is sizable and they have spent a lot of dead money on fired coaches across the athletic department recently, including Bill Cubit, who never even got to coach a game after the interim tag was removed.

Basically, it would take a total disaster for Illinois to make another change after 3 seasons.

Well they went 3-9 his first year and 2-10 last year (0-9 in the conference). Would you say another season like that would qualify as a disaster? I don't see how anything short of probation could be more of a disaster

Illinois has had several equal or worse records over the last 20 years, so not necessarily.

Lovie was hired in March 2016, so he's only currently in his second recruiting cycle. I already mentioned the hefty buyout and Illinois is near the bottom of the B1G in spending, too.

So yeah, it would still somehow have to get worse before making a change.
