so without equating property tax differences, over a 6 year span, we have a gap of roughly 2.5 million total.

Usually in these situations the offeror "grosses up" the base pay in order to account for tax consequences. So let's imagine you wanted a base pay equivalent to 1 million in a tax free state, you would offer 1.3 or somesuch in the state with income tax.

Taxes won't have any bearing on whether or not Jimbo takes the LSU job. Period.

When Jimbo comes and buys his 2000 acre duck hunting paradise, he's coming out ahead on property taxes.

Looks like he's only paying $8,500/year in Leon county property taxes.

He has a very modest home.

He owes 8,500 this year to leon county

He may still owe city

At a millage rate of 21, his house assessed value is roughly 450k (excludes exemptions)

2.2 million might be the more realistic gap with income tax and property tax equated over a 6 yr span

This.

The Jimbo decision will not be about money.

I meant to say decision. Most think Florida State will match. At least that was yesterday.

Louisiana top individual income tax rate is 6%, but the effective tax rate (after deductions for federal taxes paid, excess itemized deductions, etc.) is much less, maybe in the 3% range. So for every $1MM in salary, the effective tax liability is probably somewhere in the area of $35K . At $6MM salary, LA income tax is probably in the $210,000 +- level.

Property tax difference between Tallahassee and BR on $1MM home is, roughly, $10K (FL) versus $5,500 (BR). Actually, this might be even higher.

So the negative tax effect to Jimbo moving to and working in LA, using these numbers is probably around $200,000 give or take a few thousand. That's real money.

I live in an income tax free state. They make up for it with property tax.

I know TX well makes up for no income tax.
