He would be a home run hire. But a majority of people on this site will only be satisfied if it's Saban or Jesus Christ in the flesh

Kelly is like an older lesser Jimbo Fisher. He wins but he doesn't do anything great then he rolls around with a cycle of about 4 years before he has a "great" team that he really does nothing with. Let's not forget this guy would not be a culture fit for our program. We also don't want a dinosaur that will be retired possibly in a few years. No.

The records from his last 3 seasons are:

12-1 (lost to Clemson in CFP semifinals)
11-2 (lost at #3 Georgia and at #19 Michigan)
10-2 (lost to #3 Clemson in ACC champ game and #1 Alabama in CFP)

The guy has won everywhere he's been. He's at a great school with probably the best tradition in CFB history, but faces a bit of recruiting limitations (relative to the powerhouse public schools) that he just can't overcome. Who's to say that if here were at a place like LSU where those recruiting impediments weren't a hurdle that he wouldn't be a championship coach? Quite frankly, in this era of CFB he's probably reached at (or near) the max of what he can get out of the Notre Dame program.

He has a FAR better resume, that spans 30 years, than almost everyone else routinely mentioned on here.

Luke Fickell has done more than Kelly did at Cincy so apples to apples

Fickell hasn't gotten Cincy to 2 major bowl games yet, and he hasn't had an undefeated season yet. Kelly did. So no, he hasn't done more.

So you are saying you never want LSU to win big games.

Remember what happened last year when we hired dinosaurs for coaches.

Not to mention his very underwhelming performance as a HC.

What the frick?

You have to admire the shitposting on here. Everyone agrees that ND isn't the same job it was 30, 40, or 50 years ago. It's in fricking Indiana, and they can't just recruit anyone they want anymore with the academic restrictions.

Yet, Kelly has managed to become the winningest coach in ND history, has played in a national championship game, and made the playoffs twice. That doesn't even account for building Cincy into relevancy, winning the MAC at CMU, and winning multiple national championships in D-II.

Sooooo underwhelming.

We give Riley a pass for this but not Kelly? Kelly is a damn good coach, but not sure if he can recruit at an elite level. Consistently in the top 15 at ND, at LSU we’d need him to be closer to 5. Definitely would bring stability, but he’s 60 and already has a pretty damn good job. Not my #1, but nowhere close to melt worthy if he was the hire

Thread is about Kelly, not Riley. There’s a lot of “damn good coaches” out there. We need someone who can be elite.

It amazes me how fans pick and choose. Kelly is a dinosaur, but Saban who is exactly 10 years older and won 5 nattys in the last 10 years is not.

That’s your problem, whose elite out there other than Saban. You want LSU to find a unicorn. There’s some risk in everyone that will come.

You need to re-read. I said “can be elite,” not “is elite.” There’s a difference.

Since you seem to lack common sense I'll make it easier for you to comprehend: With Saban you're guaranteed NCs even if he's only here 5 years before he retires or even less. With Kelly you have questions about his culture fit here on top of just how good can he recruit and he has never actually won anything. He doesn't have a coaching ceiling left either he's on decline if anything moving forward. Now you see why Kelly is a dinosaur but Saban isn't called one? Because Saban gets you those NCs and he's the T-Rex of the dinosaur coaching circle.

Jimbo isn't young either but he won himself a NC and he's definitely a better recruiter than Kelly. He has accomplished more even if you can argue Kelly has a harder time working with what he has. Not that I really want him either.

My thoughts exactly. Would be great program rebuilder and would likely get over NC hump here where he will likely not do that at ND. I think that piece, at this point in his career, may make LSU attractive to him. He could bring real credibility here for 5-10 years and then hand off to younger coach. I think he would be home run hire.

When is the last time Notre Dame won a big time football game against a non-overrated program? I'll wait

Yup this is a good point too. ND is like the Chokelahoma under Kelly. They fold under any team with a pulse in big games. "but mah restrictions at ND". Oh well, we only have what he works with and what he has is he's the Bob Stoops of the NCAA. You can speculate should've, could've, would've all day but you can't deny what's on paper.

If you're going with Kelly miles well take a chance with a younger coach who at least has an opportunity to grow his coaching ceiling to be a dominate force in NCAA. You have no sustained longevity with Kelly and you can argue he may be on a coaching decline that seems to happen with most older coaches.

LSU needs a young coach who's relatable to the players, can establish a culture fit here, be here for 10 years, and is forward thinking. With the toxicity in this program right now I have serious doubts Kelly can come in with his personality and change the culture for the better. It's worse considering his age.

You’re right OP, he would be a home run hire. People don’t realize how hard it is for Notre Dame to compete against top programs in the modern landscape of college football. The fact that he recruits as well as he does and occasionally is in the hunt is incredible. Take a look at how Notre Dame was doing for the 15 years before Kelly.

Nicholas sir, just what has Brian Kelly won at Notre Dame? OK….. nothing! Absolutely nothing. Can you help me out here a little bit by blaming the University or coaches on his staff that held him back?
