Arky people were split between Nutt and Gus. Gus would bring that back up and there are a number of boosters that hate Gus. Some think Gus was trying to get Nutt fired and himself placed as HC. I think that's the gist of it.

It would have divided the fanbase which is why we got rid of Nutt. Not to mention the weird arse ties to one of the biggest churches in the region. I don't trust Gus as far as I could throw him and would've had serious problem rooting for my team if he was the head hog. Just look at the bill of goods he sold to stAte.

Luckily Jeff Long is a hell of an AD and never even considered it.

Let's just lay it out there -- historically, Arkansas as a state doesn't produce the same level of talent that other states in the southeast, particularly those that have schools that compete pretty much year in and year out, produce. For Arkansas to be competitive they have to first lock down the solid talent within their home territory (talent that is usually found on the offensive side of the ball) and then work outward to fill the gaps. To me, this suggests a coach familiar with the area who MIGHT have an offensive background. The second part is conditional.

Given that, why the hell would you bring in a coach with a defensive background and no ties to the region? I'm really confused by this hire.

As for Gus, he's the definition of a boom-or-bust hire. I think Auburn has about one million/year they can give to a DC. With the right one, Gus could thrive. He's a legitimate offensive guru, even if you set aside 2010 and the Campocalypse.

ETA: That being said, hiring Gus instead of BMFP was a huge head scratcher for me. Definitely felt like Jacobs was giving a huge middle finger to the fanbase and boosters that were pro-BMFP. From what I understand, there were a lot of them. Oh, and I say Jacobs but I mostly mean whoever was truly behind this hire. Who knows?

ETA2: Gundy would have been a better hire for Arkansas, IMO

You're high!

Gus is a bust and he will get fired in two years unlefss they are on probation and if that is the case they will keep him until it's over.

Bielema is a great hire and he will kick arse down here with the talent we have in the south. His style of football lines up well in the SEC. That Gus offense bullshite doesn't work down here and please don't say Auburn 2010, I could have coached Cam Newton and those guys to a Natty.

The Gus Bust will end ugly.

Neither was the homerun that both fan bases were looking for. Bielema might work out but I don't think that Gus will. AU knew they could hire Gus and he would have been announced much earlier if he was their top choice. I was actually getting worried when I was hearing Chris P to Arky. That would have been a homerun.

i'll ask the question:
arkansas and AU fans, who was your homerun hire that you wanted?

Gruden, Cowher etc will not be treated as serious answers.

I recall something similar working fairly well against Bama last month.

And don't say "they had a once in a generation QB." Those seem to be walking around a lot lately.

Not really. Not for multiple schools at the same time. Tebow, Newton, Manziel are very rare players.
