I dont know, hiring a special teams coordinator who’s never called plays on defense seems like a weird hire for a defensive coordinator position

He was co-DC at Texas when they rolled out a good defense

Prior to his time in Oxford, Hutzler spent one season in Texas in 2020 as the co-defensive coordinator. His defense ranked in the top No. 9 in the FBS in fourth down conversion defense (.333) and Longhorn junior Joseph Ossai earned consensus All-America honors under Hutzler's guidance. Ossai ranked No. 14 in the country with 16 tackles for loss while registering 55 total stops and led the Big 12 in forced fumbles with three.

He's also coached at Ole Miss, South Carolina and Florida. Sounds like he knows his way around the south for recruiting

We've got fans flippin out like this is the end of the world. It's a risky hire, but could be a huge one. He's been around some legit DC's

Hutzler had LBs and STs when he was on Muschamp's staff at USC.

I don't remember either group as being worth a wet dogfart.

Risky, unless you're assuming he learned a lot under Saban.

Ask UF how that's working out for their DC hire

It was the only stat in his Bama profile.

Weird hire. He isn't listed as the primary on any current commit for Bama and he's never had sole responsibility as DC. He didn't call plays at Texas. Gonna guess this may be another Co-DC spot.

Not that I don't think Hutzler would/could be a good DC, you just don't want the SEC to be your learning grounds. Surprised Lebby isn't leveraging more of his Baylor/Heupel connections. So far he's relying pretty heavily on his two years at Ole Miss and then keeping existing coaches.

Ok? And?

Dude could turn out to be an absolute stud of a DC but so far it seems like State’s AD is not giving Lebby a lot of money to work with for assistants

Not a fan of the hire but I don’t think this is the cause of it

If he had a higher budget then why wouldn’t he go after someone with DC experience do you think?

Looks like my suspicions were correct. Hutzler will be Co-DC with Matt Barnes from Memphis.

Memphis ranked 60th in points per game last year and 93rd this year with Barnes as DC.

This is just a head scratcher. Unless Lebby knows something we don’t (and that’s entirely possible) then I don’t know why he wouldn’t just hire a person with solid DC experience.

Why is this a good hire?
