ETA: not sure why my thread title was edited, but the article is from ATVS, just to give proper credit.

A good read on Herman for anyone who's interested. It's hard to not see him as the top candidate.

quote:

Tom Herman is the best candidate for the LSU job because he has the best chance to eventually be described as the Best Coach in America. He's not there yet, but at least the potential is there, which is more than you can say for a lot of the Big Name Coaches that got thrown around.

quote:

In two years at Texas St, his offense led the Southland Conference in total offense each year. They also ranked 8thnationally in scoring. That kind of performance earned him a promotion to FCS, a two-year gig at Rice. Rice scored 41.8 PPG, 8th in the nation in 2008. They also ranked 10th in total offense, 18th in yards/play, and 18th in passing offense.

After a three-year stint at Iowa St which is, admittedly, the black mark on his resume, he got the Ohio St. job. He managed to get Iowa St. to 60th in total offense in his third year, but he never cracked the top 75 in scoring offense. But hey, he tutored Iowa St's #2 all-time leading passer, which speaks more about ISU's dismal history than anything.

At Ohio St, once he was no longer wildly outmatched in the personnel department by nearly every opponent, he reverted back to the coach he was at Rice and Texas St.

quote:

Houston had the #36 class in the country last season, according to 247sports. HOUSTON. That ranked ahead of the homes of similarly touted coaches such as Utah and Louisville. In Kevin Sumlin's last year at Houston, not a bad recruiter himself, the Cougars ranked 73rd in the nation.  He landed a verbal commitment from the first five-start recruit since who know when, beating out such small schools as LSU and Alabama. This was easily the best class in Houston recruiting history.

He is the offensive mind version of Aranda

He does great things versus elite defenses with equal talent

Despite his membership in Mensa, Herman isn't really trying to outsmart anyone on the field. His strategy is about putting athletes in position to make plays through simplicity and repetition.

The offense is geared around inside zone and power-O, run schemes that look to get downhill and plunge the ball through the A and B gaps. Herman will sprinkle in play action and run/pass options to punish defensive tactics for sneaking run defenders into the box. Herman looks to do less with more, emphasizing execution and mixing concepts in different formations to give his QB answers.

If Texas retains Strong and we somehow don't land Herman, I may light myself on fire out of anger.

this is so disingenuous. the only reason the class was ranked so high was because of Oliver, who was going to UH long before Herman ever got there.

"Houston's been my leader probably since sophomore year," Oliver said.

in part because he's from Houston and his brother goes to UH, and in part because Herman had just hired Corby Meekins, who was Olivers HC at Westfield HS

you clearly dont know how badly Houston fans hate applewhite. he's their cam cameron. go to their board or reddit, it doesnt take long to get the idea

"Enjoy getting fired from UT in a few years, Tom ... AND TAKE APPLEWHITE WITH YOU"

"Oh god that would be the best to see UT have to deal with Applewhite's shitty play calling again."

"Major Applewhite is trash!!!! That is all."

"Applewhite is a fricking idiot. He's a good QB coach but can't figure out how to run an offense."

"frick APPLEWHITE SO MUCH. OH MY GOD."

"God fricking fire applewhite right now."

"Applewhite needs to get fired. Only he could squander that."

"Applewhites playcalling is/has been terrible."

"Can we fricking leave Applewhite in Dallas? Dallas sucks. He sucks. It's a match made in heaven."

"Applewhite has to go. No arguments. No excuses. He has to go. Been an issue since last season and it seems like it's only gotten worse over time, he needs to go."

"I honestly wouldn't mind him getting fired tonight and Herman taking over play calling."

"GOD DAMMIT IT APPLEWHITE. YOU'VE DONE THIS shite FAR TOO frickING MUCH. frick YOU. THAT RED ZONE FAIL IS ALL ON YOU. frickING PIECE OF shite."

could someone who knows how to do it, calculate what Tom Hermans recruiting class would have been ranked last year WITHOUT the 5 star recruit. That would give us a fairly good evaluation of how good a recruiter he actually is. If you subtract out the 5 star DT that he got by hiring his high school coach and with his brother already being on the team, how would the class rank?

That's convenient lol. Shouldn't the guy get some credit for working the system like saban and others do instead of being ridiculed for it ?

frick Herman. I'll support him if LSU hires him, but I don't have to like it until he proves himself. Until then, frick him.

FWIW It's Jimbo's job to lose now anyway.

If hiring his brother was the only factor than he would be playing in the SEC right now
