Coach O seems pretty adamant about running a 4-3 base scheme

He said just this morning he wants to be multiple.

Having the worst defense in the history of the school may have changed his mind on this. Almost like a coach that is evolving. I am not mad at him if he saw his mistake and rethought his whole philosophy.

The great coaches would’ve evolved already, especially when getting to work under Aranda and successful defenses for multiple years culminating in a natty.

O disparages Aranda on the way out only to fail with his vision. Hopefully Arnett gets the same “total reign” on defense and O can be the primary caller/texter of recruits (who are gullible enough to buy his crap).

O really doesnt know what he wants. He knows that every time he makes a decision that makes him happy, he fails. The key for O is to think of everything he would love to see and just go with the opposite.

Obviously I have no info, but him saying he wants to be multiple just suggests to me that he knows he may have to hire a guy who runs a 3-4 again.

I'm sure he still wants to run a 4-3.

Of course...it would have been nice if he had said things like this before our 3-4 centered guys like Ika started to transfer...but it seems

When Ed drives the bus, you are going to jump the curb a few times on the way to school.

If you watch the Ole Miss game we actually ran some 3 min fronts with Roy as a SDE type and Bj standing up. It went pretty well.

Webb could work well in that same stand-up pass rusher roll as well, I would bet.

Forcing a 4-3 just shows how outdated Coach O is. That worked when teams were running out of the I formation, which few teams use today.

This is completely wrong. Ohio State runs a base 4-3 and had 4 down lineman on 95% of plays last night. Clemson runs a base 4-3. Notre Dame runs a four man front (4-2-5). Alabama ran a four man front more than half the time last night as well.

It might not be the most common scheme today, but its not like a four man front is some sort of archaic flying wedge crap from the 1940's.

Often times O just says what he thinks people want to hear. When he was hired at various times he said he wanted a "spread" offense...then a "pro style" offense. The he hired a guy as OC who ran neither in the general definition of both styles.

The defense was terrible this past season after O touting all offseason how excited he was that LSU was going to run the 4-3. He's not going to come out and say "Yes. We are sticking to the 4-3 no matter what." He knows there could be some vocal pushback to such a statement considering how bad of a defensive season LSU is coming off. So he says he wants to be "multiple" because it leaves enough ambiguity to satisfy the naysayers.

The truth is the ONLY thing O knows he wants is pressure and playmaking from the DL. He figured last year simply just switching to a 4-3 defense would create that...with no real regard as to strengths/weaknesses of the players that would now be asked to execute that system. After that approach failed overall he's not going to make any hard and fast demands about how he wants things run. He just needs it to be A LOT better

People keep saying this, but its not true. CEO has stated multiple times, including today, that he wants to be "multiple" on defense. That means he wants to run variations of both 3 AND 4-man fronts.
