C’mon… you don’t remember Saban telling his LSU team he was staying at LSU?

To be fair, it’s hard to get suspended at LSU.

That actually couldn’t be further from the truth, unfortunately

It's a crap shoot either way. Franchione never coached at a&m, sumlin did, Sherman did, jimbo didn't, and that's just the last 20 years.

He’s the exact hire most of us had in mind. And wanted. It’s the reason why the Stoops thing was so nuts.

You can't hate the Stoops hire then convince yourself Elko is a homerun. Elko is Stoops with fewer skins on the wall in a weaker conference.

He may turn out to be the next great coach in college football but there's no argument for him being a better hire than Stoops outside of the unknown.

So basically ATM hired the ACC version of Stoops?

I’m not convincing myself of anything; and I have nothing personal against Stoops.
But we know Elko and how great a fit he was here.
That entire deal last night was a head-scratcher.

Onward.

This was always their best-case scenario IMO

Not true. LSU compliance is its worst enemy.

No he isn’t. And what’s the difference between he and Stoops specifically?

He runs (or allows his OC to run) a better offense. It works well when the QB his healthy. It will be a lot easier to get those kinds of impact players at A&M. Stoops has proven to be too conservative.

Assume he never coached at A&M, you can’t say with a straight face he’s the best candidate.

Elko was a well respected defensive coach while he was in the SEC. He then goes to Duke and immediately turns them around.

Cutcliffe had elevated Duke from a bottom dwelling ACC to a perennial bowl team, but they had fallen back to the bottom of the ACC during the last several years of Cutcliffe’s tenure. It was a program in bad shape when it hired Elko.

I imagine Aggies hold Elko in higher esteem because of their familiarity, but he checks a lot of boxes for any school.

Elko was there for 4 seasons, it’s not like he has deep roots there.

Idk, I think everyone thinks he’s a solid coach, but the booster revolt on Stoops only to turn around and hire Elko is strange af

That was my point. It’s a solid hire, not spectacular in any way. But the poster I replied to implied this was a huge thing while the thought of Stoops was “nuts”, and both of those things can’t be true.

Alright now the is a hire the rest of the SEC can get behind.

It’s not an over the top slash hire and it’s not a sure dumpster fire like Stoops

Nice job, Aggie
