A balanced discussion about Mel Tucker

This board obviously operated in extremes. Tucker is not my number one choice but there’s just as many question marks around Napier and Aranda as there is Tucker.
He’s an outstanding recruiter and his defenses improved each year at UGA. (Before you say that was Kirby keep in mind people said the exact same thing about Kirby when he was at Bama). He also clearly has improved Michigan State in his time there.
That he has a lot of NFL experience can be looked at both positively and negatively, and his track record as a head coach is short, not sure you can take much from
1 year at Colorado or him coming in as a new coach in the covid year.
It would be a risk, but to act like he would be a HORRIBLE hire is, I think, unfair.

Agreed on all points. He’s a risky hire though, and I’m not sure that LSU can afford that right now. We need someone with a high floor.

Horrible, probably not. But he's 2nd or 3rd tier

Youre trolling at this point

His defenses in chicago were abysmal

Haven’t we learned that one good season does not a top tier candidate make?

Not my first choice but I’d be fine with him.
College football is 95% recruiting and he excels in that department. Think he could be very successful at LSU but it would definitely be a risky hire based on his limited track record.
But the same thing could be said about the Kirby hire at UGA.

Outstanding recruiter because he got guys from the portal ?
There is a huge number of players in the portal right now hoping for a scholarship.
I don't see anything that gives Tucker an advantage over Napier.

This is true and a fair thing to bring up. Though being an NFL DC and an SEC Head Coach are two totally different jobs.
His defense at Michigan State this year isn’t very good either, though they’ve still won 8 of their 9 games and I think only 2 players are 4 star recruits are better.
That he seems to be ahead of the game on utilizing the transfer portal is a plus.
It would be a coin flip hire, but so would Napier and Aranda.

I’d be happy with either. If it were up to me I’d slightly lean Napier though.

This is a top 3 job.
He has done nothing to warrant even a look at a job of this magnitude.
He will be a .500 coach at seasons end. I’m guessing he will lose 2 of the next 3.
His candidacy is laughable.

I agree with this statement. While I don’t want Tucker, there are some things I like about the way he coaches and caries himself on the sideline. He does have some positives but it’s a huge risk because it’s really being based off of this season. Aranda has the advantage of being at LSU for an extended period of time very recently. He’s already familiar with the program and seems to be on the right track at Baylor. I think he has a great future ahead as a head coach whether that’s at LSU or not.
I personally feel like Billy Napier is riskiest hire of them all. I don’t get the love for the guy. He hasn’t really done anything that impressive and he’s being touted as the next great coach. His offenses are unimpressive and he’s never had any kind of control over a major power 5 program. He really hasn’t even been a coordinator for one for an extended period. Fired after one season at Clemson as OC and one year as Co-OC at ASU. Then three years as a WR coach at Bama. Not exactly a striking resume.

Has Tuck given us a % on how much of tProcess he’s using ?

I don’t think it’s too much to ask to see a bigger body of work.
Do I think Tucker would be a “bad” hire? Not really. Do I think he’s even close to the “best” hire? Not really.
