12 ways of understanding Nick Saban's new $7 million salary

College football
1. The Sun Belt: $4,382,990
Saban's salary advantage over the combined head coaches of the entire Sun Belt is nearly as large as his overall record against the conference, according to the USA Today coach salaries database. After famously losing to ULM in his first season at Alabama, Saban's teams have outscored Sun Belt opponents 290-24 in six consecutive wins. He earns eight times what the league's highest-paid coach, Bobby Petrino of Western Kentucky, takes home.
2. The MAC: $5,181,067
MAC coaches Frank Solich and Jeff Quinn, who make a combined $840,000. Kevin Hoffman, USA Today.
Saban played in the Mid-American Conference, began his coaching career in the Mid-American Conference, and got his first head coaching job in the Mid-American Conference. He now makes more than all the coaches in that conference combined. Saban's $7 million annual salary would pay the MAC's highest-paid coach, Ohio's Frank Solich, for nearly 14 years. Saban makes nearly 18 times as much as Western Michigan's P.J. Fleck, and Saban hasn't even added a DJ at Bryant-Denny.
As Northern Illinois has shown the Crimson Tide, if you want to suffer one inexplicable loss to an inferior opponent every year, you can do so in a more cost-effective way.
3. The Mack: $5,392,500
Even before Friday's announcements, Saban was the highest-paid coach in college football. Saban took home approximately $90,000 more than the next-highest-paid coach, Texas' Mack Brown. His new deal puts him $1.7 million ahead of Brown and $2.2 million ahead of Oklahoma's Bob Stoops. Even with the exorbitant inflation in coach salaries over the last 15 years, nobody is catching Saban any time soon.

The most ridiculous thing about the article is that soccer manager Jose Mourinho is being paid $19 million a year.
And people think that sports coaches in the United States are overpaid.

Alabama football in 2011-2012 profited $45 million dollars.
That's after expenses for people who don't know what profit is. Saban is the cause of the sustaining success, and an extra $2 million is a drop in the bucket EVERY year for the revenue of the University. Also outside the athletic department, enrollment rates are through the roof since 2008, almost half the incoming class is out of state, and the University makes an extraordinary amount of money from that. The cause? Saban and Alabama football.

I understand cricket. You don't have to run when you hit the ball, there are no foul balls, and an excuse-me, checked swing hit can go for a grand slam. What's not to understand?

So...no. Saban is the reason for the increasing profits. It isn't just any coach that can increase profits the way he has. Also in case you were wondering, from last year to this year, overall athletic revenue increased $20 million dollars. In one year.
People keep pretending like we're selling the farm to keep Saban here, when in fact he built the farm, grew it, and the University get to eat most of the fricking corn.

He's a big part but not the sole one. Even your article says that Alabama finished their first capital campaign for athletics before he got there and made more than they projected.
Rights fees in the SEC have exploded in recent years.

Fair point but still, the revenue in athletics have more than doubled since Shula was coach. That's got to tell us there are outside factors. The number is a 112 percent increase from 2006-2007.
