Interested to see the responses in this thread.

Always been a King fan but not really of his horror.

1. The gunslinger
2. The green mile
3. 11/22/63
4. Different Seasons (Count it as one book and exclude Apt Pupil for me).
5. Wizard and glass

6. On writing.

Now that I think about it there are quite a few of his books I enjoy and many that I hate

Was thinking about IT and how I gave up and was thinking, I just read 20 pages about something that really wasn't pertinent to the story, so frick you Mr. King.

I prefer his son Joe Hill.

The Shining and The Long Walk are my favorite King books. Absolutely hated The Stand

1. The Stand.
2. Pet Semetary.
3. The Shining.
4. Either Wizard and Glass, The Gunslinger or The Waste Lands from Dark Tower.
5. 11/22/63.

Honorable mentions: Under the Dome, Desperation (I know people around here aren't fans, but I like it) Salem's Lot, Carrie.

I like his horror stuff, but The Stand is the deepest, most fascinating thing he's ever done. I couldn't pick which Dark Tower book was my favorite, so I lumped together the best 3 in my opinion.

1. The Long Walk
2. The Body
3. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption
4. The Running Man
5. Rage

The only other King book besides those 5 I've read is The Dark Tower book 1, which was good but didn't grab me enough to continue the series.

It's probably good that Rage isn't published anymore. Though I wish I still had my copy.

Guess I shouldn’t be surprised how different these lists are. The love for 11/22/63 and Needfull Things is a little unexpected. Guess I’m more a “King Classic” kind of guy (read: old).

1. The Stand
2. The Drawing of the Three
3. It
4. The Talisman
T5. Salem’s Lot, The Dead Zone, The Shining, Christine

Edit: had to replace The Gunslinger with The Drawing of the Three, my fav of The Dark Tower. I need to go reread Wizard and Glass, too many people love that one and I barely remember it.

I'm not a huge King fan, but I liked 11/22/63 because it was so different than his other books. Some of the reasons I don't like King books were still present in it, mainly the lack of depth to many of his characters.

3) Salems Lot
4) The Green Mile
5) I want to put so many in this spot but I think I'll settle with Pet Sematary

My favorites are the ones where he doesn’t spin a fantastic yarn for 3/4’s of the book then cash it in with some bullshite sci-fi ending that doesn’t make much sense. I can’t think of one right now.

I think that's one reason The Stand is at the top of a lot of lists. That's why I like The Shining...heck, pretty much my top five.

I agree endings are King's biggest issue. I loved Under the Dome's build, but it can't be top 5 because of the ending.

Doctor Sleep was like that. It was a good book and just fell apart at the end. He has some where he can nail the end, but more where it just sort of searches for something and pulls a random idea.
