With Halloween around the corner, I need a good scare.

First post on this board.
I’m not an avid reader, but last October I found myself enjoying a few chilly, windy days by the fire reading “The Turn of the Screw.”
To be honest I hadn’t even heard of it before I saw a YouTube video mention it among all time horror classics, and since I saw that it was very short I decided to give it a shot.
Although it was a difficult read I did enjoy the experience, and in the past year I’ve tried to step my reading game up a bit.
Anyone have a suggestion for a good haunted house/ghost story, or anything with a lot of atmosphere to light some candles to on a dark day?

I loved Dracula. Sure it's old school, but damn it's creepy.

Richard Matheson's Hell House was pretty scary, but it's been a long time since I have read it. It may not hold up over time though

Joe Hill - Heart Shaped Box is good

Salem's Lot - Stephen King

Binge read A Song of Ice and Fire, and then contemplate that there is a very real chance that the fat man dies before finishing either of the last two books.

It’s not super scary, but Something wicked this way comes is a perfect October book.

Classic! Bradbury is an incredibly underappreciated writer

He’s appreciated, but sadly only for Fahrenheit. Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated man, and Dandelion Wine are fantastic.

Yes that's my point. Everyone knows him for Fahrenheit, but he has a large body of work that is great.

Gotcha. Have you read Dandelion Wine? I read it just about every July, except for this past one because I wasn’t in the “summer mood” thanks to being stuck at home with my kids for what seemed like a year lol

Carrion Comfort - Dan Simmons

Pet Sematary is the scariest book ever written as far as I’m concerned

It's not really scary, but A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny is a perfect Halloween book.

I fricking love that book. I had previously only read Zelaznys sci-fi and speculative fiction, and was blown away with how good Lonesome October was.

I just read a pretty creepy little book called GILLS.

Anyone else get traumatized by these books as a kid?
Hell House - Richard Matheson (Steven King called it the scariest book written)
Heart Shaped Box - Joe Hill (premise sounds a little hokey, but it's great)
Ghost Story - Peter Straub (not as scary as it is just a good book)

Thanks, all. I’m about halfway through Dracula and will take all others into consideration. Also picked up “Ghost Stories of Henry James,” for more classy British scares.

I bought A Night in the Lonesome October based on the recommendation in this thread. An easy read, fun and original. Thanks.
