What is your opinion of Harold Bloom, the famous critic from Yale?

Not sure if it is true anymore, but he at one point was regarded as the eminent critic in America
He is old school and fiercely opinionated, and seems like a contrarian of sorts. For example, he shits on Harry Potter, Tolkien, David foster wallace, maya Angelou, among others .
He is the most educated person in the world on Shakespeare, but he seems overrated on everything else, and he doesn’t seem to think modern works qualify as sublime compared to “classics”

Pompous, egotistical arse but definitely worth reading.

Well he has one perspective. That’s all any of us get to have. He just projects his over a bigger playing field than most of the rest of us. At the end of the day, it’s all just one guy’s opinion. Nothing more.

His commentaries have been standard reference fare in libraries for decades. He does have some credibility and is/was the eminent critic certainly for the entire second half of the twentieth century.
It does not mean that one must agree with him, but his work can not be ignored, and is useful in the study of literature, if that's what you must do or choose to do.

he's a complete and utter genius - see his prolific work on Shakespeare. But he's also insufferable, so there's that too. As someone else said, the way he shits all over stuff like Harry Potter is over the top.

Not necessarily. He is a huge Cormac McCarthy fan. I think he just has very particular tastes as to be expected from someone as intelligent and eccentric as him. He provides a lot of insight but at the same time of his criticism should be taken with a grain of salt.
